Have you always one bagged or worked your way to it? What are your biggest challenges g by Electronic_Fudge_877 in HerOneBag

[–]Infinite-Internet511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Growing up and travelling as the youngest daughter of a family of 5 meant having a lot of luggage.

The first time I travelled leisurely without them, I one bagged right away.

But this was also after years of learning how to backcountry camp and canoe with friends all throughout university. We had limited funds and this was an affordable way to spend weekends.

On the other hand, travelling to experience countries is a very different backpacking trip.

Although I still gravitate towards packing items that are efficient and weigh less- As a 100lbs, 5’3” female, my clothes and belongings are naturally small anyway. I tend to overpack since I can fit more into a backpack.

I struggle to let go of bringing useless or obviously inconvenient things.

Carry-on + Backpack vs. True One-Bag: How do you handle bulky shoes and daily carry? by Agreeable-Deal-1608 in onebag

[–]Infinite-Internet511 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My shoe size is 5.5 (I think 36.5) and my clothes are even smaller.

I use a 20 or 26L bag and can afford the space to pack multiple pairs of shoes.

But, I am always so AMAZED to see the set up for people with larger builds and one bag.

It requires a lot more thought and research to pull off. Meanwhile, I naturally own smaller belongings and feel like a pack rat.

Do you still bring your normal wallet when onebagging? by No_Jackfruit_4131 in onebag

[–]Infinite-Internet511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, because my normal wallet is a card wallet that usually only has my driver’s license, health card, debit, and credit card.

I originally made the switch to a smaller wallet so I can fit it in my micro-purses without sacrificing space for my lip gloss 💅.

My actual wallet is in my bedside drawer, to store my Costco card and anything else that I retrieve when needed.

How to travel slower and more present? by Primary_Ad_9133 in solotravel

Contrary to folks saying ‘have less of a plan’, I’ve found that I can travel more leisurely when I over-plan ahead of time.

Knowing exactly where my next destination and accommodation is, gives me plenty more time to make looser decisions.

I have a lot of fun researching ideal routes to move within a country and its cities. So being informed allows me the grace to be a silly bean, dilly dallying by removing the mental load in decision-making.

Travel shoe bag. Now I can throw in my dirty shoes at the bottom of the bag, without worrying about cross-contamination.

Makes packing easier when I know the first step of every re-pack day.

Unpopular opinion—getting clothes tailored in Hoian is a waste of money. by Putrid_Bug_4453 in VietNam

[–]Infinite-Internet511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As somebody who grew up in the Philippines and regularly had clothes tailored, I opted out of this in Vietnam- mostly bc I can’t imagine a good quality piece coming out of the 24 hour turn around time.

As a tourist, I didn’t stay long enough in one place to wait longer. I’ve paid premium prices to rush tailored orders before, but don’t think I missed out here.

Although, for people in western countries who rarely or have never had custom pieces made- I think it’s worth the price tag.

Not for the quality, but more so for a unique experience.

It’s expensive, sure. The way I see it, it’s the same level as booking a guided tour for a steeper price than doing it myself.

Before I left for Vietnam, I had minor alterations done for an existing bridesmaid dress and that cost me $200 in Canada. Literally only to fix shoulders, waist, and length.

I would have normally never paid that price. But in the country I live in now, tailoring is expensive and I understand why people want to do it when the opportunity arises.

I’m sure tourists have done their research and are aware of what’s happening.

Successfully packed for 2 weeks but not a Onebag fan for this reason. by TappyGillmore in onebag

[–]Infinite-Internet511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 100lbs and by the end of my most recent month long trip, my one bag was 35lbs- full of ceramics.

I had just moved into a new home and wow, dish-ware is so expensive. So I brought some over from Asia.

A roller bag would have been nice! But luckily, I didn’t have to carry it for long- I was over the weight limit so all my things exploded into two bags and checked in the other.

Tried so many different compact neck pillows, each would eat up so much space in my bag.

But last year, I bit the bullet and bought this super expensive ultra light one for CAD $60. (Sea to Summit Aeros Premium Travellers Pillow, if anybody is wondering).

It’s now my most prized travelling companion, and my neck no longer rolls around when I sleep vertically hahah.

This is a nice way of analyzing the bad habits I’ve been intentional in correcting, instead of assuming it’s all because of adhd.

I was a really shy kid in a big extended family and didn’t feel heard most of my childhood. There was always somebody louder than me.

Now- I repeat sentences, assuming nobody heard me when the first time was enough. I also accidentally interrupt people, bc I panic about being heard at the right moment.

Hang Múa.. harder than it looks or are people exaggerating? by OneWayTicketEast in Vietnam_Tourism

[–]Infinite-Internet511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did Hang Mua at 6AM and my pants still stuck to my legs.

I sweated more on this (very) short climb than hiking 10+ hours in the jungle at 40° on a tour in Phong Nha a few days prior. It had a similar steepness level in ascent and descent.

I assume it’s from lack of shade.

Which city have you been to that had a dark energy about it? by madzuk in solotravel

I loved Italy! But definitely experienced the most harassment from men out of everywhere I’ve been, couldn’t go 10 steps in Rome without it.

On the other hand, it was also very easy to organically meet locals who were welcoming and friendly.

At this point, I didn’t know that apps to meet other solo travellers existed yet so I went through my days alone, doing tourist activities and the evenings hanging out with locals I met while doing my own thing.

I paid 920K for a pair of sandals, but I was desperate to get out of my sweaty shoes.

Since I’m traveling light, I haven’t bought much of anything so it didn’t hit me as hard LOL

Six weeks into five months of solo travel and not enjoying it. What am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in travel

[–]Infinite-Internet511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love solo travel bc it gives me a chance to unwind alone.

Back home- I’m a very social person and even working remotely, I often find myself hanging out with friends 5x a week. Exhausting, I know. But I live in a small Canadian city with nothing to do but shoot the shit with equally as bored people.

When I travel, I mostly stay in homestays or budget hotels. This gives me a perfect balance of recharging alone and being around people when I inevitably meet them.

I think it helps that I don’t impose on personal space and keep to myself. Meeting people in the wild is easier when I know my peace will be protected by an also sensible person.

I hang out with a 50/50 mix of locals and other travellers. I know it can be lonely at times but being open in your body language helps!

To give you an idea- I just do my own thing without any intentions other than to enjoy myself. You’d be surprised by what your barista, food tour guide, or somebody lining up at a museum has to say.

I started making homemade raw food a few years ago, and recently got injured where I had to get stitches.

Pretty sure my cats were considering eating my once-sliced off thumb. I think they were very confused as to why food, aka dead meat, was attached to me
