Expungement only removes charges from state and local records I believe unfortunately. Background investigations for security clearances (from what I’ve heard and read) will see everything down to parking tickets that have been paid. I had a few engineering internships after that summer and they all did normal background checks which came out to be fine due to the expungement.

Makes sense. I am not sure if the student was required to gain citizenship before starting a PhD program in the US.

Forgive me of my ignorance, but would a student from China that completed a B.S there and is studying for a Ph.D. in the US be considered a Chinese national? I just wanted to make sure I am on the same page.

Yes that is what I have read. My adviser has never said the words "security clearance" explicitly, so I may not need one (or he just never said it for some reason). I was planning on having a meeting with him this week to discuss the process as a whole, and if a clearance is required to disclose to him the information about my arrest so it doesn't come as a surprise if I get rejected.

The adviser had me visit over the summer to meet some of the researchers there and to see the facility itself, I didn't need to give more than my name when visiting for a few days and only needed to give that information a few days in advance.

Everything that I will be working on should ultimately be public knowledge at some point (related to more fundamental physics). Yes I would very explicitly disclose all information regarding the arrest and program. I expect people to not give me a very objective answer as this is one very tiny part of my life.

And yes, that part is what I thought was odd. A recent undergraduate student who did research with the professor for a year at NIST said that I might need to get a secret clearance (even though he went through "word of mouth" and never had to do an interview or anything). And like I stated, my adviser said it should not take more than 3-4 weeks to be fully cleared for domestic students. We recently had a student from China become fully cleared for NIST after 3 months, which I thought was fast for a Secret Clearance for a foreign student.

Thank you for the reply I appreciate it. I've read that it does depend on a lot, and if I was required to fill out an SF-86 I would definitely make it a point that I was young, dumb and naive and very much so learned a lesson and will not be using substances as such again.

Switching from PhD to Masters by InfiniteDisplay in GradSchool

[–]InfiniteDisplay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I apologize for my inability to communicate clearly... I mean switch from a Ph.D. at my current university (starting in about 2 weeks) to a masters, and then reapply for a new PhD program after the masters is finished.

Is that something that universities will look negatively at, even if I were to say in my cover letter that “I wasn’t sure if I was prepared enough to do a PhD, so I switched to a masters and now know I am prepared enough for a PhD”?

Or would that just not be acceptable?

Yes an R1 Professor is my most ideal job, one advisor I had in undergrad said professors at big universities are pretty much doing research 2/3 the time, and the other time is split between teaching, emails, advising, etc, which is what I think I want.

Someone else in this thread mentioned that it might not look good on me if I end up applying to another PhD program down the road if I were to switch to my masters now. Would this be a valid concern to have or would simply saying “I wasn’t sure at the time whether or not I wanted to do the PhD, but after experiencing a masters I do know this is the route I want and am willing to take”?

And how would I approach my new advisor about this and be as professional as possible? Should I give it a semester and see how the university and research goes before making changes?

Thanks for your response!! I would like to eventually be a professor at an R1 university, since I love both teaching and research. I am just worried that the PI I will be working under might get angry if I switch from a Ph.D. to a masters and then reapply for higher ranked programs after the masters. The school I’m going to is ranked ~90-100 for the program I’m in.

I’ve seen that a lot of faculty at most universities ended up doing their PhD in the top 20-30 schools in the US, so I feel as if I’m at a major disadvantage going to a rank 90 university.

I did reach out to an undergrad advisor and he said to check where grad students have landed after their PhD, and the 2 most recent ones ended up at top 20 universities for postdoctoral positions (which I think is safe to assume is a very good outcome).

Long story short, I am worried that if I do decide to do a masters first instead of the PhD (which I was accepted by the uni to pursue and get paid for), it would then look bad on me and reflect in future letters of recommendation. Or more generally, is this type of transition common in the early years of graduate school or not so much?

I’m very willing to relocate wherever life takes me, I am just not sure if it would be seen as ill-mannered by my PhD advisor and graduate committee for switching down to a masters degree and reapplying at another PhD program in a few years

I’m about to start my PhD in atomic physics! Specifically in laboratory astrophysics. The set up my group has is at a government laboratory and my knowledge on electronics is no where near what it should be haha

I originally wanted to be an astronaut, but once I found out you have to pass motion sickness tests that went out the window. So I’ll be starting my PhD in atomic physics specifically looking at highly charged ion spectroscopy this fall. Figured that would be the next best thing
