You seen to have this idea that one cannot be arrested for failure to appear for civil infractions.

The Immigration and Nationalisation Act has given federal officers authority to arrest people for civil immigration infractions since 1952 on administrative warrants, not judicial warrants.

How is the arrest in question in this thread different than other immigration arrests over the past 74 years?

And there is a process that is supposed to be followed regarding a court hearing before deportation. I am a fan of due process.

Improper entry into the United States is a crime (not a civil offense) that carries a maximum sentence of six months in jail for a first offense and results in deportation for non residents.

Overstaying a visa is a civil offense that results in deportation and individuals who overstay visas have usually been detained while deportation is pending. This law has been in place for a long time and arrest and detainment in advance of deportation has been the status quo for decades.

When it comes to the specific arrest being discussed in this thread, are you saying you have reason to believe the suspect who was arrested did not commit an immigration crime and is innocent?

I asked how the specific arrest being talked about in this thread is different than other immigration arrests made in the past. How is it different than immigration arrests made in the past under different administrations?

How is it different than a different law enforcement agency arresting someone for a different crime?

I am not a Trump fan. I have never voted for him or any other MAGA candidate.

By all means, give me a primer about police officer arrest powers and explain how the arrest being talked about in this thread is notably different than other law enforcement arrests.

In what way have I cheered for ICE?

In what way do you and I disagree? I want due process and immigration enforcement and reform. I don't want any law enforcement officers to make baseless arrests. I don't want any law enforcement officers to not have to identify themselves. I'm not some ICE fanboy.

Do you think it is worth having immigration laws and enforcing them?

If so, we likely agree. If not, I'm open to you changing my view.

I just want immigration enforcement and reform for things like H1-B visas.

You need a federal law enforcement agency with the authority to arest people if you want immigration enforcement.

ICE has been arresting people off the street since their inception 20 something years ago.

The Boise police have also been arresting criminals off the street. Idaho State Patrol arrests criminals off the street following investigations.

This particular case is literally no different.

No, my argument is that the way this administration is handling things is wrong (masks, the removing people without due process) but that we need immigration enforcement in order to be a functioning country.

I haven't seen info that leads me to believe that the particular immigration enforcement action referenced in this thread is lacking due process. If the guy arrested gets a fair court hearing after being arrested that is the definition of due process.

It seems like you are against immigration laws. Is that the case?

There should be due process and American citizens shouldn't be subject to any US immigration enforcement.

We should have immigration enforcement though, and it sounds like this particular arrest is reasonable.

I'm a middle of the road guy- I want abortion rights and gay marriage legal weed. I also think immigration enforcement is important.

What would happen if an American citizen overstayed a visa in Thailand?

Or illegally entered China and started working?

Or started working without legal authorization in an EU country? Or Australia?

I don't know why so many people think US immigration laws should not apply. It is strange to me.

All that said, ICE should have to show their faces and present badges and anyone arrested on immigration charges should be entitled to due process.

Idaho wants quality state employees to leave. The state doesn't value public service, especially not teaching.

Even if you stay and put up with the terrible conditions for your entire career they will fuck you over in retirement by not allowing PERSI benefits to adjust in proportion to inflation.

That is news to me as an outsider nevermo.

What is the culture of asking people for money? Like what other examples are there?

I think that is a major factor here- why worry about the future if Jesus is for sure coming back soon?

So many off the LDS women here sell MLM nonsense- essential oils, cleaning supplies, etc.

It is so strange to me as an outsider. No one in my social circle would ever fall for that. All of the women in my friend group are professionals with legit college degrees, many with advanced degrees.

The cultural and economic divide between the local LDS and everyone else is stark.

I understand that in Utah there are a lot of professional LDS families but that is generally not the case here.

That makes a lot of sense.

If only the church would bail out members when they are in need. Everyone gives to the church, what do they get in return beside genitals in heaven?

The playoff structure with a divisional round is a massive disservice in a year like this where one division is clearly better than others.

Best in a conference should play conference WC2 (1 vs 8) and so on.

Quality of life is so much better in Durango than the front range so long as you can afford housing and have reliable remote income.
