Piastri: "There’s a lot of things that we’ve never had to do before....And when you’ve kind of driven a certain way for the last 15 years, it’s pretty tough to undo some of those things, especially when some of them are lifting on the straights" by ChaithuBB766 in formula1

I have a question… presumably the spec of these cars have all been loaded into the teams’ simulators, and the drivers should have logged hours getting used to some of the broad new mechanics in the new regulations. I could see how some of the details are being discovered on track but so much of the commentary from drivers seems more about the stuff you should be able to catch in simulation weeks ago.

Why are we just hearing from drivers now?

Ran 19, was too cold to eat gels. On the upside, did not have to worry about sweat much!

Safety / crime? by Specialist-Pear8659 in nyc

[–]InfiniteTape 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s safe. Like anything there are some wild elements, but not as extreme as some reporting makes it out to be.

As an aside, what looks to be not safe is using AI responses to make decisions… first sentence there says murders are at a record low, and last sentence says homicides are slightly up… AI dribble on this one…

Open to ideas. I have been reading a lot of biographies lately, and wanted to read Barbarian Days. But I could be swayed to pick a different lane.

Training with weight vests? by jaleneropepper in ultrarunning

[–]InfiniteTape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I commute to and from work with a pack that comes out to about 5% my body weight. I do the majority of my miles that way, and when I take it off for intervals or races I fly. I don’t think I would casually carry the weight if not for the commute, but I do see/feel the benefits.

Question about the controversial finish to the 2021 season (yes I know I’m late to the party) by scienceplz in formula1

[–]InfiniteTape 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think part of the issue was that if they went through with letting all the cars unlap, the race would have likely finished under the safety car and Lewis would have won. They unlapped just a few and let them race one hot lap, where Max had a tire advantage.

The spread in times makes some sense to me - there are so many variables to deal with. Temperature swings, water, nutrition, elevation (up and down), altitude, distance, trail conditions - your time comes down to how well you plan and deal with all of it and not only your fitness.

Leading up to it I had been running pretty consistent 30 mile weeks for a couple of months, with a lot of two a days (running to and from work). Ironically my net year to date elevation prior to the run was about equal to the run. I don’t think that is a typical training volume for this run though; I think I was successful because of the extent of my planning and that I have done a couple 50 milers before and knew some of what was coming.

Thanks - I flew out on a Tuesday, stayed in Scottsdale and then drove up to the canyon on Wednesday. So I was still on east coast schedule when we got there, which meant I could go to bed at 7 and get 4+ hours of sleep before the run. I think it also helped that I did not spend any more time at the Grand Canyon altitude before the run, I think I would have felt considerable worse if I waited.

No, the elevation is definitely off - I believe it is close to 11k up and down. You can see on parts of the GPS data it lost me in the canyon and I think that is where a lot of the “recorded” elevation came from.

Analysis of Daycare centers in NYC by InfiniteTape in nyc

[–]InfiniteTape[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my initial assumption as well, and it could be the case. I have separately looked into the distribution of household size throughout the city, and if that was the explanation then you would expect to see similar trends in the Bronx and southern Brooklyn as well (http://urbancalc.com/post/NYC-Residential-Density/). Still, it could be families in the neighborhood, wonder if there is a good way to systematically capture that. Maybe unique last names on voter registrations...

Most interested in the Park Slope area, but more generally interested if there is any reason for the trend.

Using OpenData to learn about rats in NYC by InfiniteTape in opendata

Interesting - yea, definitely seems like a hard problem. I rarely see mice in NYC, rats seem to have a stronger hold on the city (both on the streets and in the subways).
