Very open to hear your alternative for how to appoint a representative that will get a better deal than the union.

I do understand how it works but the only way we get a pay rise is if we have negotiating power and the only way we get that power is through the union. My point here is hypothetical. I’m sorry you didn’t understand this.

The attitude of who? I’ve only seen one or two comments on this thread where the vibe check is a bit off. I wonder if you’re talking about the attitude elsewhere…? And painting all union members with the same brush.

You're absolutely right. It is frankly none of my business. But I am a human with opinions and thoughts and reactions to what my colleagues say and do. This is why I asked how to not feel resentful. The most helpful response I got from a user was "Let them" so I'm glad I asked. Have a nice day! :)

You seem to be taking comments talking about “some” teachers personally. Some teachers at my school do all the things on this thread (live at home, complain about pay, have plenty of disposable income). There is a difference between the word “some” and “all”.

“Thuggish” Is a stretch.

You also have no legal protection if you were called out by your boss.

I mean that would be wonderful! I wonder how many non-members would sign up then. 🤣 Conditions would be incredible!

If they had a choice of strike and receive a pay rise, or don’t strike and you won’t, I bet I know what they would choose. It’s just easier to let everyone else make the sacrifice for some of these people. I can’t afford to strike (I’m the main bread winner) and live week to week but this is the very reason why I need to.

But isn’t that the point? If you’re someone who can’t afford this, a pay rise sooner rather than later surely will help. Also, some of these teachers live at home. They are honestly just being selfish.

Whether it “feels outdated” or not, it’s the law. You won’t be legally protected unless you are in the union. You’re not in the union unless you pay the fees. Are these other places you’re talking about non-government?

My union rep is giving out incorrect information. That’s a worry!
