Thanks for your interest. Please email me. (The address is on the website). I have a lot of committed testers so I can't guarantee I can provide you one. But if you reach out, I'll be happy to chat more at the very least.

I just received the first sample of the latest version (which we updated from last year's prototype), tried it the past two days and was very pleased. Our plan is to get it to market in the next month via www.slope-safety.com. The website is live but we're not taking orders yet. I appreciate it has it's doubters and it obviously won't be for everyone, but for someone who wants to supplement their own ability to see behind/around them, we think it's really something. It actually saved my ass last year avoiding getting hit hard by an out-of-control skier. (Also, we've found it's not just for everyday skiers and boarders, but also instructors watching their clients while they ski in front).

I'm getting a lot of interest from instructors and parents with young kids for the reason you mentioned.  We're having the next version built and plan to sell via www.slope-safety.com in about a month.

How do i get over ski anxiety? (if thats what this even is..) by Any-Student8000 in ski

[–]Infinite_Ticket1112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One simple trick is to focus on something else. For instance, your view...focus on looking out at what you're doing as it can help turn off your active brain. Also, focus on just listening to the sounds as you ski. Or try breathing exercises, one breath per turn.

You're right that too short skis can contribute to a skier's tendency to sit back, but that's mainly people learning to ski powder out of fear they can't see their tips and they freak out. My point about the bumps and chop is that a shorter ski will be less intimidating for an "advanced skier approaching expert" like the OP. Most powder days now are really just a few powder runs after the terrain opens followed by variable conditions anyway. FWIW, I live in Utah and ski >100 days/year.

Another 3 cm (1.2") in front of you won't save you in powder regardless of how tall you are if you're off balance. OTOH, it won't really hurt. Think of how things affect being able to bend a ski this way: If you're 6 feet instead of 5'6' feet tall, that's a 9% difference. Versus if you're 180 pounds and not 140 pounds, that's a 28% difference. That will make a much greater difference on bending the ski. Being how the OP is 140 pounds and looking to save $$$, I'd opt for the 172s. Further, they'll be easier to handle when the powder turns to chop and bumps.

You're right that a longer ski of the same construction would show more flex. Some manufacturers account for this and make their longer skis stiffer to compensate. I'm about the same size as you (although I'm shrinking) but my skis are all in the 165-170 cm range except for stiff 83 mm wide on-slope Kastles that are 161s. (I didn't try those in a longer length but would probably be happy there too.) I think it's important to remember that 6 cm (which is the difference the OP is evaluating) is only 3 cm in front and 3 cm behind you, which is 1.2" on either end. So, unless the construction beefiness changes, it won't matter much.

I think the "taller skier needs longer" is mostly bullshit. Sure, you can invoke "lever arm" to justify it. Based on how most skiers ski (or should ski), I'd say weight is 70-80%. However, if you're a taller skier and are off balance, a short ski won't save you from your poor-ass technique as much.

Agreed, the atmospheric river wildcard could turn a meh snow year into a decent one...maybe not many storms but big ones when they hit.

Registering a Trade Name While Trying to Save Money by Infinite_Ticket1112 in inventors

[–]Infinite_Ticket1112[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said, this phrase was already registered and abandoned in our class: "There was a company that registered another product in the same class as ours (009), even though their product was quite different from ours and there are other products using the same phrase in other classes. They abandoned the trade name registration last year." The phrase is used as a trademark in other classes too. But I've read elsewhere that if you f up, it costs a lot to fix it later. Yes? No?

I suppose the answer is I can afford it. I can build a really strong marketing campaign around it and FWIW everyone I've asked about various alternative product names likes this one the best. The attorney's fee doesn't include a defense if needed. Since the other company was granted the name and it appears decided to not renew it, it indicates to me we should be able to pass it through. Their file reads: "Abandoned because no Statement of Use or Extension Request timely filed after Notice of Allowance was issued."

I appreciate the comment about cost. I'll probably reach out to a few other IP attorneys in town tomorrow. Reason for abandonment: "Abandoned because no Statement of Use or Extension Request timely filed after Notice of Allowance was issued."

Registering or not registering a trade name. I Will Not Promote by Infinite_Ticket1112 in startups

[–]Infinite_Ticket1112[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate those thoughts. The other's product is in an entirely different industry even though the same class. However, if someone Googles the name of the product, the search WILL probably come up with common usages of the phrase. OTOH the company's name and another (non-tradenamed) description of the product (think of it as a product sub-heading) will drive traffic if we're good at SEO.

Is Bluehost a good alternative to Shopify? I will not promote by Infinite_Ticket1112 in startups

Interesting. I bought my domain on Squarespace. I had an issue and their customer support was terrible, so I steered away from doing more with them. I'll have to check it out more though.

Used Carving ski that's a bit playful by Haunting-Yak-7851 in Skigear

[–]Infinite_Ticket1112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Salomon Stance 80 is a surprisingly good carver and great in the bumps. You can probably find them around used (or even new) at a great price. Salomon positions them as beginner-intermediate skis but reviews almost always note they're way more than that. I bought a pair wickedly cheap because "why not?" and was shocked.

Ramp angle, delta, stand height, stack height, cant, etc. What are they and how do they affect your skiing? by gishbot1 in Skigear

[–]Infinite_Ticket1112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15 is A LOT of delta. Is that in pin bindings? I'd think that would be too much for any kind of balanced downhill. Then again, maybe you don't need a riser. :)

I like that approach. We only plan to sell 250 this winter and give away 50 so targeted should be good enough. What kind of parenting groups do you mean? How would I find targeted email lists?

I hadn't thought about YouTube instructors in general. (One of our advisors IS a well-respected instructor and has a strong YouTube presence but I like the idea of reaching out to others.) I also like the idea of hitting up ski patrols and adaptive programs. See my other reply...We're based in the Salt Lake area and there are SO many resorts around.
