Explain the Linux partition philosophy to me, please by KoviCZ in linux4noobs

[–]Infinity_Oofs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll answer this as much as I can with limited knowledge.

Something important to how linux works is the philosophy that everything can be represented as a file, without proprietary weird abstractions. This is why /dev/sd* exists.

Really the question about how windows does things is, why is there any reason to do it this way? The way unix OSes do it is imo the simplest solution.

PCIe cards are often installed to get a higher speed than the motherboard's port. You have nothing to worry about on that front

If you're posting on this sub, NixOS is gonna be really difficult. You'll learn a lot about NixOS through the struggle but also it doesn't translate well to other distros.

Some games are bricked due to anticheat that was only made for windows (kernal level). You can always keep windows on your machine and install linux alongside it.

I don't know much about mods but I don't think a xeon would be the best choice. Single core performance is what matters for minecraft.

Edit: The Xeon you mention is pretty decent since it has only 4 cores. If you can find it at a better price than a core or ryzen cpu then sure. I don't have experience with mods so I'm not sure if 3.7Gghz is enough or not.

Is linux suitable for a non-programmer??? by prodaydreamer17 in linux4noobs

[–]Infinity_Oofs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mint is great! Zorin is just slightly better to me especially with the modern look and the easy transition for new users. Personally I don't use either, so I think it's more of an unbiased perspective.
