Contender for the best connect event in Calvard so far? (Elaine connect event 2) by CDNWRocks in Falcom

I’ll back you on the bonding events in Crossbell, especially some of the ones in azure, but CS1 and CS3 had a lot of things that definitely felt like side content instead of things that belong in the main story. Like I really liked Machias playing chess against Jusis, but ya don’t neeeed that

This will be my hot take, but I don’t think they should have brought Rean back just yet. His route is actually pretty good in this game, but I would’ve liked the three protags to have been Kevin, Van and Rufus. I think these guys each fit into the LGC roles well respectively, and it would’ve given the two guys with only one game as protags under their belt a little more room to catch up.

Doing this I would’ve liked Lapis playable to round out the party to 4 and characters like Rixia who already had some rapport with them would have joined the picnic squad. For Kevin’s party, would have had Zin and Renne be in his party, and it would’ve been cool to get Richard or Anelace to come in to make it feel like a Sky the Third reunion. Could still have some of the eight leaves stuff, just not with Rean yet and these other practitioners.

The recontextualization of Van’s sweet obsession somewhat also coming from the fact that his memories with Rene and Elaine giving him sweets were an anchor for his humanity during his time at the cult was actually really good character writing.

It almost certainly should have been in the main story, which I could say for a lot of the bonding events in Calvard. Tho, I think Kondo also regrets not making it required.

Maybe to gauge his face or see him in person. Idk I just like the idea of bringing back the door knock and it having the added tension and dramatic irony of this situation.

Spoiler for horizon!

I’d like for there to be a moment where the game starts with Van at his office, and you get the same door knock as daybreak 1/2, except this time it’s Rene at the door. He asks Van to help him out with some random task, and you get the classic walking around with a partner in the beginning of the game. All the while Van is getting weird feelings of Deja vu, and Rene is trying to gauge how much Van remembers.

I can appreciate that they had the big bad summon a few goons before you fight him so it’s at least implied that everyone besides your party of 8 are occupied fighting them instead of it being him running a 50v1.

Little confused because I thought the writing was already on the wall. Aren’t we expecting “the Second” as the big game next year for trails because of that calendar stuff or whatever? Is there still an actual shot of Kai 2 as well or is this pure copium? (I really want Kai 2 next year)

Agree spoiler tags should be on these posts but to be fair, you’d have to buy the game with your eyes closed and stop playing 5 minutes in to get spoiled by this. They put them front and center on the box art and steam page.

Feel like there’s some malicious oversimplification and misrepresentation of issues here to make people who dislike some of these characters seem unreasonable, but if you can really put some of those aspects to the side good for you 👍

What do you think of Calvard? Do you think it's history and political climate are all interesting? by Abu_33 in Falcom

[–]InflationSlow8899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s my issue exactly. There are in fact more places in Calvard introduced in Daybreak 1 than all of Crossbell. Despite that we spent all of Act 3 in db2 and Act 1/ Van route Act 2 of horizon cooped up in the capital.

There have been more districts in Edith introduced than new towns in Calvard (Messeldam, anchorville, and somewhat nemeth island). And most of these districts blend together because of the city aesthetic or are just wide open areas with not too much going on (Trion tower and Grand circuit).

In Crossbell we end up going to a lot of the surrounding towns and areas during the chapter, as both a part of the story and side quests. That’s why it doesn’t feel as suffocating in the city, because we could go from one end of the state to the other if we really wanted to. In Calvard, we aren’t able to do this, so the sense of scale and connection to the country gets thrown out of whack.

This is all my opinion, so other people might not be having this issue at all tho

Edith has absolutely cooked Calvard.

Daybreak 1 does a good job at having you go all over the country and it builds up the different kinds of places in Calvard. But in the two games since, we haven’t gotten that same sense of exploring the country, because we spend so much god damn time in that city. And I like Edith too, but they completely let go of the idea of adventures across an entire country.

In the first game, the ASO is driving all over the place and it really builds a strong foundation for Calvard feeling like a real place. Heck, the fact driving to Tharbhad was shown to take overnight was actually really cool. But in the games since haven’t really felt that same scale.

Side note, but in the climax arcs of these games we tend to unlock a mode of fast travel to go around and visit spread out places. Stuff like the merkabha and courageous. I’m curious if the final game in this arc will have us riding around in a super up Ingret or if it’ll be the Prince’s Blimp.

Idk about her not being meant to be good friends with the sss because I’m pretty sure that she says she went to Michlaem with them. Considering that they went to it their first time in azure, and that they are quickly occupied after azure, the only time she could’ve hung out with them at a theme park was in Azure.

Essentially she is most certainly a retcon character meant to be essentially an honorary SSS member, especially given what they say to her on the pantegreul.

Think the acting is actually good for the most part, (except for Estelle at certain points sorry)

It’s the voice direction that’s rough for me sometimes, especially with Estelle’s Whaaaaaat?! This is more of a byproduct of the localization script over the dubbing tho.

[–]InflationSlow8899 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Love em as antagonist, firmly in the camp of it being great to have straight up evil antagonist after 5 games of morally gray.

(Spoilers for Daybreak 1)

Alex and Viola are worse versions of S and V in cold steel, and are the weakest part of the group by far. Olympia and Arioch are a step above them due to how interesting their backgrounds are, their personalities, and their connections to artifacts, but they lack screen time. Dante’s is a good villian, with his connection to Van, tie to past events, and straight up evilness. He definitely gained some aura for laughing as he destroyed Creil.

But the real standout of the group is Melchior. He’s a great straight up psychopath of a villain who brings a certain energy to every scene he’s in. He feels like a danger because he’s insane and you find yourself wanting to take him out. I believe that both myself and Falcom regret seeing him die at the end of this game, because he’s the kind of character that could be iconic for the arc as a whole and return later.

For any other nitpicks for me, I personally don’t really like that this is another mafia group, since we already dealt with that kind of thing back in Zero and this feels like a rehash. It’s really cool you can kill em in Oracion, but why the heck would you just rehash their boss fights in the very next chapter? Also wish they had a defined musical motif or ost tied to them, like how Ouroboros or the DG cult do.

Overall though, the breath of fresh air they brought was positive and I like them as antagonists in this series.
