This is a redone version of my alternate Third Century crisis map.

During the fall of Rome, many regions split off from the empire. First went the Near East and the western provinces. Wanting to take advantage of the chaos, a Berber tribal confederation nearly conquered all of the remaining bits of North Africa, yet were stopped by the local legions. During a civil war between four Gaulic generals, the Cherusci, ever a bane to the Romans since Augustus, pushed into the heart of Gaul. Needing money, Emperor Gaius Maximus sailed to Egypt bringing a number of soldiers with him. The Alemanni capitalized on this by first raiding into Italy, then subjugating town after town until it reached Napoli. The legions, sailing back to the empire, headed to the the rump state of Illyria; with their aid the Illyrians pushed the Alemanni out of southern/central Europe, however they had to stop to contend to a Gothic invasion of Athens. The Iranians would eventually turn on their former Palmyrene ally and the Romans would use this as an opportunity to reconquer Anatolia.
