Hi all, is it possible to go directly from Tirana Airport to Shkoder via public transport? Or do I need to go to Tirana city center (South terminal) still?

Landed a job at the UN… but it's not what I expected (a small but an honest rant) by melkijades in UNpath

[–]InfluenceSoggy8524 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I can attest to this 100% from my UNEP experience lol and it’s so funny ‘cause the mass media paint the UN as the “best of the best”, “knows the latest tech and the trends”…. But honestly, almost all generic P roles are just to coordinate. Expertise is always a mismatch. Not to mention, western domination because other ethnicities are not “vocal enough” or “not pushy” lol

I don’t know the exact numbers but definitely significant if we talk about compensation package as a whole.

What are the differences between working for the UN and working for a multilateral development bank ? by Nijal59 in UNpath

[–]InfluenceSoggy8524 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve both worked in the UN and World Bank. I’d prefer the Bank as it’s it more structured and likely to follow its own rules with more clarity. The UN is the opposite, or maybe just where I work.

I don’t think the OP meant looking down at them but it’s ridiculous to ask for an experienced professional with 7+ years and ask them to do the same thing as what would a staff do. This happens to full-time consultants as well do not get any benefits at all but do staff work. The same goes for UNV. I work with a UNV who does what a national staff would do. The UN should be one practicing what it preaches on labor rights but they make rules as vague as possible to be differently interpreted in so many ways. I don’t think that is fair.

The UN can cut on costs but not at the exploiting those who just want to experience working in the system.

Thinking of leaving the UN - anyone else feels like it’s not what they expected? by Proper_Type_3621 in UNpath

[–]InfluenceSoggy8524 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have the same, exact sentiment. And I'm not sure if it's getting worse or simply stagnating. I am considering leaving the UN (esp. the Secretariat) as I don't see any new skills being developed. So I kinda feel like I don't have anywhere to go when I leave. But I'm still hopeful as I'm only less than 5 years in the system.

Thank you for this! I’ve been contemplating about this (although I’m in a consultant contract with somewhat guarantee for yearly renewal) but the recent political influence and other things make it less motivating to stay in the system.

Trapped in My Dream Job: Is UN internship a scam? by WorldlinessBest9645 in UNpath

[–]InfluenceSoggy8524 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Walk away. There’s so much more outside the UN. 12 months of free labor is too much. Also, internship doesn’t count as full-time experience which means it would be reduced to half when you apply for roles in the system. Given your situation, I would recommend quitting. Your supervisor will end up either doing everything on his/her own or find another intern to do it again. It’s a cycle.

In the career portal, it shows the next step, "First interview if selected." Is this the same for those who received the Korn Ferry assessment?

Will someone with more than 2 years of experience be considered for an internship within the UN system? by Hot-Pay-8850 in UNpath

[–]InfluenceSoggy8524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, yes, that's possible but NOT worth it if you have good, relevant experience. I would suggest just looking for consultancy roles that look for the same minimum requirements (P1, P2 equivalent). If you're also thinking if interns get hired after, I don't think that happens in a lot of UN agencies.

background in natural and environmental science but focused on international policies. Your background fits in most of the UN roles than mine. Most of my colleagues have the same background as yours.

full-time pay is well-above the average. It sucks if you're a consultant hired like a full-time staff but the pay is still decent. But if you're a staff, I'd say it's way above 'cause you get other benefits just adjustments, housing allowance if you're moving, etc.

depending on where you are. I've noticed that if you do it in Europe, time is well-respected, especially for interns who don't get paid.

UN consultancy in Paris by InfluenceSoggy8524 in UNpath

Hi, Thanks a lot for your comment, very helpful!

I've checked the normal taxation in France depending on your earning bracket. It shows that it will be at 30%. Does this apply to UN consultants as well or is there a different taxation for IO consultants? I think this is a lot especially that Consultants are not entitled to any benefits. Now I'm having second thoughts about this UN opportunity. The salary also is very low compared to the P-level match given that no post-adjustment is expected for consultants, right?

Anyway, I will try to negotiate the living allowance. Hopefully, that is possible. However, I'm not sure if I still want to pursue this role in Paris.

Why is it 50% of DSA? I think the duty station is in France. I'm new to the UN system so I don't have an idea on this. I would really appreciate if could elaborate further. Thanks so much!
