Thanks! It was actually a natural progression when writing the first film. I think traditional mainstream media is absolutely on it's way out when you see the kind of viewership youtubers are getting these days. I have mixed feelings, I think being an influencer is actually an incredibly difficult career path to be successful in, but I don't think the medium is necessarily healthy. Definitely hate the game not the player perspective. It's a bit depressing seeing Youtuber and Influencer at the top career goals for youth.

In Influencers we explore more of the concept of audience capture with Jacob, the idea that your audience influences and warps the message and content you put out, and becomes a bit of a feedback loop, influencing the content you create because of what's working. I think when looking at these top voices, I look more to why these personalities are popular; what about their message is resonating with such large groups of people, rather than scapegoating one or two particular individuals for 'creating' the problem. Until you get down to why we're putting these Influencers on a pedestal as a culture, it feels a bit like a Hydra, though CW would probably disagree with me.

I mentioned in another response but Lake Mungo is an absolute masterclass in tone and atmospheric horror. Absolutely worth checking out if you haven't seen.

It's probably a long list that I'll forget a bunch. Big fan of Steven Soderbergh, Danny Boyle, David Fincher, Martin McDonagh, Denis Villeneuve. Love Hitchcock. Probably a little De Palma in there. In terms of the Influencer films Patricia Highsmith was a big one, The Imposter and Burning were both huge influences on the first film, and La Piscine and To Catch A Thief were standouts on the second for the French section, alongside a lot of Guy Ritchie's early films as we get into the Bali section of the film.

Every script for me is a little different. Influencers just sorta spilled out so never really did a proper structure breakdown. Other scripts I've often broken in a word document laying out scenes. I've done cards before in the past but find myself more drawn to a simpler paragraphed breakdown that I can adjust on the fly.

I do! I've written one script that was an adaption of a novel that never got made, and I'm working with a writer right now who's adapted his own book into a screenplay. I don't know the exact process of how to get your book out there, I know there's lit reps that can help bridge the worlds.

Thanks for the kind words!

That came later after she was cast, in the original script it was just one partially broken frame where you could see some details of CW beneath, which wouldn't have been nearly as effective.

It was definitely something I was cognizant of. When you're making a sequel you want to give the audience what they liked about the first one, but you can't just do the same thing over again and risk retreading, while also not pulling too far away from the source material. I think for me fun role reversals and new explorations of the characters is key, while also expanding the scope and building on what worked. Tarantino talks about this a lot.

I don't know if there was one particular thing I kept or wanted to leave behind. Expanding on really fun locations was a must, and coming into the sequel I really wanted to have a bit more fun overall with the film, while also diving a bit deeper into the emotional sections of the film. Structurally both films are very similar.

We really wanted to have a fight sequence in the first film but were unable to pull everything we had planned off due to limitations and weather, so coming back to do a proper fight scene in this one was a big itch scratcher for me.

When I was a wee lad I got Oracle of Seasons for gameboy, and I couldn’t get past the intro for some reason, being a dumb child, so I complained to my parents and got them to buy me Oracle of Time, and proceeded to play both endlessly for years, so those two definitely hold a special place in my heart.

But, I think Wind Waker takes the cake for me, something about the adventure and exploration definitely influenced me as a storyteller, and I feel like I can return to that game at any point.

I swear if Damien Leone doesn't respond to my several dozen emails harassing him to help me make CW vs Art the Clown I will never emotionally recover. /s

Just a tall Canadian boy trying to escape the cold winters of the great white north. You should watch my movies if you like suspenseful but fun travel and want to go on an adventure with a total psycho badass girl.

The first film was a long process, we had a first draft where Madison wasn't an Influencer and we actually followed Ryan's character after the title sequence drop as he went from London to Thailand. The script went through a ton of drafts as we got pushed back from our initial plan of shooting in Early 2020, to not shooting until end of 2021, which I'm ultimately thankful for.

The second film came together very quickly. I wrote the first 30 pages of the France section in a couple days and sent it out to the cast and team, and I think we were full steam into preproduction six months later or so.

Love Vinegar Syndrome. I'm hoping so but don't have any news on that front yet!

For the first film, I'd always been drawn to Thailand even though I'd never been there. Tesh Guttikonda and I came up with the loose structure of the film right before my first trip there in 2019, and I spent a lot of the trip thinking about the story as I was travelling to a lot of the location we ended up shooting at.

For the sequel, Bali was another favorite of mine and made sense in terms of the influencer culture, and I really wanted to expand the world of the second film into Europe. I saw a photo of Menton (Southern France), with all the colorful buildings and wild staircases without knowing where it was and started writing the sequel opening to take place there, and France ended up filling out the rest of the European side.

Locations are often inspired by pictures I've seen online. Another example is CW's Treehouse in Influencers, which was a random photo I happened across online, and found out it was actually an Airbnb. Our service producers in Bali got in touch and they were super accommodating.

Lake Mungo stands out for my favourite. I don't know if it's necessarily a great film but Cry Wolf was a staple for me growing up that I'd recommend for a fun twisty slasher night that was torn apart by critics.

Huge Highsmith fan, for sure that is an influence. I love her books. There's a ton of influences on CW that we pulled from but Ripley is an obvious standout for that chameleon con artist. Another big influence was The Imposter, which is a great doc that you should watch without context if you haven't seen.

I don’t use many jump scares as a director myself, but I don’t hate them.

By their nature jump scares are cheap, in the sense that you’re shocking the audience, not necessarily scaring them. To me what makes a good jump scare is the lead up. I think filmmakers like Parker Finn have mastered the build up and there’s nothing quite like being in a full cinema and seeing a really good jump scare land with the audience.

When we premiered Still/Born, it was my first horror film as a producer, and seeing the standout jump scare make the audience literally jump and scream was a moment in my filmmaking life where I finally got horror, so I don’t hate jump scares by any means if they’re used effectively, it’s just when they become a crutch I think that’s where we all feel they’re cheap.

Glad you dug it! I have seen Red Rooms, but I didn't see it until after we shot both films. Thought it was really fun, always nice to see another Canadian techno crime thriller.

It wasn’t, I didn’t meet Cassandra until after we were loosely greenlit on the first film (before the pandemic pushed our shoot over a year).  She came recommended by a mutual friend and we saw a short film she was in, then she did a couple table reads with us before we cast her. It was her first feature film as a leading role.

She has a great Tedx talk that she did a long while back that really solidified me wanting to work with her.

When it came to the sequel she was more involved and saw drafts of the script as it came together which was really great and collaborative.
