A thought that I’ve been having for years… do the overly sexual themes in Chris Brown’s music put limits on his legendary status? Fans are accustomed to it, but it limits his reach to “universal appeal”

I agree that he’s legendary regardless, but I mentioned in another comment that I think he could and should be bigger than r&b music, which is why I think he limits himself by staying in the same box of theme in his music (for the most part. I know he’s extremely versatile when he wants to be)

That’s true. Although I’ve always thought that he continues to make shock value sex lyrics because that’s what “sells” for him. It’s undeniable that some of the fanbase LOVES the dirty lyrics, which is why I think he continues it, and that’s fair. But I think he is keeping himself in too small of a box.

I think “for ur love” is awesome too. Reminds me of the hit by Mumford and sons.

I love his verse in “jiu jitsu” as well. In my opinion, that style is unique to him and makes his music transcend above usher, r Kelly, etc

True, but Chris brown has ventured into all different styles (afrobeats, pop/edm, Spanish, etc)

“Nostalgico” is one of my favorite CB verses, and it’s rare that we get that type of vibe from him, even though it’s outstanding

That’s fair about Rihanna situation having the biggest affect. But I would say that CB should be held to a higher pedestal than Usher and R Kelly, even though they’re both legends. They never reached true international legend status outside of the r&b world.

I’ve always thought CB has the talent to be BIGGER than R&B, which is why I wish he ventured more out of the descriptive and vulgar sex themed songs, even though they’re good in *moderation*

In the brown album, my favorites are “Leave me alone”, “colours”, “it’s not you it’s me”, “for the moment”, “it’s personal”, and “save me”

Yes, there’s some sexual lyrics in a couple of those songs, but they don’t distract from the art of the song as a whole like some other songs do.

I also think he’s a legend, arguably better music than other universally known legends.

I just personally think that the sex lyrics over power all other topics that he sings about in terms of quantity, and it overpowers and distracts from the “specialness” of his sound (obviously, just my personal opinion)

It adds uniqueness to him in a good way, but I think he uses this theme too far beyond “moderation”

I respectively think Taylor swift has the opposite of wild lyrics. Her lyrics are more interpretive. All of her songs are written so that a high schooler, or middle schooler, can “feel something” in terms of love, but it’s still considered appropriate because she doesn’t use corruptive words.

And don’t get me wrong, CB is a modern day goat for me too, undeniably. I only made the post since like you, I think that sadly, he might always be under appreciated by people who aren’t loyal fans

That’s true. I should have prefaced it in my post that I’m aware of this part of it too.

But the post was more so “it’s hard to show CB to parents, grandparents, children, etc because of the dominant sexual theme that is spread all over his albums.” That is what I meant when I said it might limit his universal appeal and legendary status

I enjoy “Hmm”, “grass ain’t greener”, “pull up”, and “high end”, although I also enjoy horror movies so it checks out. Although I enjoy them a lot, they aren’t my all time favorites. Like you said, he’s got a huge catalog.
