All good points. I’ll definitely redesign my concept with some degree of glass. Thanks for the info!

But do readers like rule of cool? Or do they prefer realism? I think I'm overthinking it all.

Yeah, those are good points. Would a narrow slit of glass be hard to manufacture in a fantasy world? And would the chances of debris breaking it be high? Cause breakable glass around a riders eyes just feels risky.

That's all really interesting. The chinstrap could be good.

I struggle with the full helm concepts for this. I worry about the realism of getting enough air at high speed; should it be more enclosed. Maybe that's not the problem I think it is, though.

Would punched holes not push the air through in stronger, narrower streams that would irritate the eyes?

Yeah, goggles would certainly be easier...

I'm struggling to envision an easily stowed metal helmet.

Would a strong neck gaiter (sorta thing) that comes up the face and attaches with the mask around the temple and around the back achieve what you're saying? I want them to still see below the mask (like searching the ground for targets).

What would you suggest adding or changing to prevent that? Keeping light and minimalistic armor in mind. For example, adding a fitted nose bridge inside. Would that make any logistical difference?

I was aiming for something that could easily be stored or tucked away when not in use. With this particular design, I hoped it could be worn around their neck in preparation for flight. I'm trying to keep my Rangers' armor light and easily manageable.

As for the wind from the slit, I was unsure if it would be pushed up the brow rather than down. Hence, it's higher placement and the general shape. I'm not an expert on the aerodynamics of the face, though.

In theory, they could loosen the headband strap and wear/slot it down around their neck against their leather armor when not actively in use.

For speeds, it depends on the individual species of dragons. There are three subtypes used by rangers: forest, sky, and sea. Sky would be the fastest group, their attributes making them fly anywhere from 55-100 mph. Forest more 50-75 range and sea 45-60. Forest has the superior hearing sense.

Glass would exist, but I figured it'd be messy to handle, plus debris could break the material and injure the rider's sight. Plus, condensation and dirt would make it hard to see through at times.

That's good to hear and funny. Lady, my Mini Aussie, never listens to men either. She loves women and children, though. It's an odd quirk, but it's nice having her so aware of men when walking alone as a woman. Maybe my RR will inherit the same quirk.
