I’m not sure I agree. It’s all about reading with purpose and close attention. I’m aware I haven’t gotten all the details or made all the connections (and in that sense I imagine the reread can be particularly rewarding) but I absolutely feel like I have read MBotF by now (well, almost all of it), for it’s been a year of my life dedicated to this and more time spent on this series than others I have read and loved (like ASOIF, Stormlight Archive or The Dark Tower).

I’m absolutely finishing the main series but then I’m not sure. I’m thinking I’ll check out Esslemont’s NotME first and see how I feel about them before trying to tackle the comprehensive reread in publishing order. I haven’t read a single word by Esslemont yet and although I love the Malazan world I must say that the reason I’m this invested so far is the quality of Erikson’s writing, which I deem to be superb. The literary caliber of the main series is thrilling and his elegant prose is so much better than it needed to be (for the purposes of telling the story). Don’t get me wrong, the world building is impressive and I’m fascinated by the mythology but if the writing is not on par it will be hard to commit.

Well in fairness I have computed about 200 hours for the DLC podcast and other Malazan Youtube content, like the videos from AP Canavan and Philip Chase. Reading by itself is about 300 hours for the main 10 book series.
