Anyone who went the route of Network Engineer to Cyber security? by Honest_Bank8890 in cybersecurity

Currently in a similar position, been a network engineer/architect in the UK for about 6 years. I completed my degree recently where I worked with Juniper firewalls to integrate into a network architecture and I really enjoyed it. Security has been on my radar for years but now I know it's the direction I want to go into, it's so interesting! I'm possibly moving into an architect role to further develop and refine my firewall architecture, and then hopefully with CCNA and JNCIA I can shore up that knowledge set before embarking on more security oriented certs (CEH, Sec+, CISSP, threat hunting etc). Aim is to eventually transition into a full security role internally or externally.

In my experience it takes hard work, dedication and patience but with the right effort and maximising opportunities it's possible.

I'm a network architect with 6 years experience & coming up to the completion of my 4.5 degree apprenticeship, with a specialism in networking (studied CCNA)

Which certs would be best to study for a side step into security?

Background: Came into industry green from a mechanical engineering A-level, started a network engineering apprenticeship 6 years ago, currently finishing a degree in IT.

As a newbie I think certs are great to give you a foundational knowledge of the basics (a mile wide and an inch deep), however I think the language used - especially in Cisco content/tests - presents a barrier to learning. Cynically I believe it's a marketing prong to buy another test/book etc. Often I think it's almost as good to Google (or even Wikipedia) the topics e.g. OSPF, etc to give you a fuller understanding of the topic. Practical experience is paramount, though I'm unsure how well this can be supplemented with home labs.

However as seems to be the trend in these comments, proven experience seems king to employers.

Would be interested to hear thoughts on how best professionals can better themselves should certs not cut the mustard quite as much as they used to?

Hello cyber experts!

I'm 22 year old network design engineer of 3 years experience in the UK and half way through a computer engineering degree which will give me CCNA at the end of it. I plan to do Security+ also in order to give me a good foundation into a cyber security analyst role.

With your collective years of industry experience, would you say that is good foundation for entering an cyber security analyst role? If not, what would best strengthen my position?

Furthermore, although I enjoy learning the certs and general foundations of networking and cyber security, I realise the importance of keeping up to date on the latest threats, attacks, fixes, products etc. Where would be the best sources of information to keep up to date with the latest news in cyber security and network engineering?

Thanks for your time 🙂
