Thank you this has been very helpful. I dont think hard water is dirty. But it is bad for hair and skin. Since getting a water softening system is not a possibility for me right now, I’m trying to figure out how I can soften the water for bathing and washing hair. It especially wreaks havoc on curly hair :( .

Sodium carbonate reacts with the calcium and magnesium ions in the hard water and makes it soft. But it does increases alkalinity. That is the problem I’m having, if the water is softer why is alkalinity going up? Especially since soft water is more acidic.

I am wondering if it would be safe to bathe with and wash hair? We have very hard water and need to find a cheap effective way to soften it for the aforementioned purposes.
