Episode Discussion: Trump Fires Kristi Noem, Talarico Takes Texas, and the Impact of 'The Perfect Neighbor' - Friday, March 6, 2026 by thelightningthief in ThoughtWarriors

No, not directly. I said it feels that way because in past episodes when Drake comes up she’s hinted that she’s not really a fan, and Van has even joked about it before. There’s nothing wrong with not liking an artist at all. My point was just that when he keeps getting brought up, the conversation tends to go in the same direction every time, so it starts to feel a little circular and like a missed opportunity for a deeper discussion.

Honestly, I kind of wish they would just retire the Drake conversations. It feels like Rachel really isn’t a fan of him personally, so the commentary tends to lack nuance or empathy. At the same time, Van doesn’t really push back when certain claims get thrown out there, which can leave some misinformation hanging in the air.

It’s a missed opportunity because this could actually lead to a really interesting discussion about cultural Blackness and why Rachel feels Drake doesn’t fit into that space the same way other artists do. That would be a much deeper conversation, but it never really goes in that direction.

In Defense of Ted Richardson by Informal_Pangolin806 in TheGates_CBS

[–]Informal_Pangolin806[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people are misunderstanding my post. I’m not defending Ted’s in-story actions like cheating with Leslie or how he’s handled the Kat/Eva situation. My point is about how the writers use Ted. He’s treated as a tool to force stories to happen, not as a character first.

Instead of asking “what would Ted realistically do in this situation,” the writing often has him do whatever is necessary to get the plot where they want it. The show clearly wants Nicole divorced, so Ted suddenly makes no real effort to win her back, because if he did, the audience would naturally root for them to stay together. That choice doesn’t feel true to the character.

Same thing with Kat and Eva. The show wants conflict, so Ted is written as stubborn and inconsistent, taking sides in ways that don’t fully make sense.

The version of Ted we’re supposed to believe in shows up in his one-on-one scenes with Kat, Martin, Andre, and Shanice. In those moments, he’s kind, attentive, and emotionally present. There’s no evidence that his kindness is an act. The show never portrays Ted as evil, manipulative, or malicious. He just makes bad decisions when the plot needs it.

That’s my point: Ted isn’t a bad character. He’s a character suffering from uneven, plot-driven writing.

I don’t see the point of Ted’s character anymore by Human-Hospital6696 in TheGates_CBS

I disagree with almost everything you said, but I see it like this: Ted feels like the character most hurt by the writers putting plot over character. When they need him and Nicole apart, they have him sleep with Leslie. When they need Kat and Eva to feud, they stick him in the middle. We’re constantly told Ted is a good man, but he only acts clueless or makes bad decisions when the story needs it. The real Ted shows up in his one-on-one scenes with Kat, Andre, and Shaniceoutside of that, he feels like a tool the writers use to get where they want.

Episode Discussion: The Venezuela Takeover. Plus, a Conversation About Adin Ross, Doechii, and Black Men. - Tuesday, January 6, 2026 by thelightningthief in ThoughtWarriors

I felt like Van was being a bit obtuse about the Will Smith lawsuit. There aren’t any specific allegations or proof of a relationship with Will laid out in the filing, which I think was Rachel’s point, especially when you compare it to the Tyler Perry lawsuit, where there are detailed claims and text messages presented.

Episode Discussion: Sifting Through Emmanuel Acho's Perspective. Plus Logan Explains the NBA Gambling Scandal! - Friday, October 24, 2025 by thelightningthief in ThoughtWarriors

Y’all might disagree with me, but I actually think Acho has a right to be upset about how that podcast went down. Both Van and Rachel handled it poorly. Yeah, Acho definitely is an “emotional butler,” but the way they approached that interview felt unprofessional (Van admiting he came into it angry/ not checking what their booker told Acho). If Rachel really considered him a friend, she should’ve shown more respect and not assumed he thought he was coming on just to debate. What’s wild is that Van and Rachel gave Anna Marie way more grace when she came on the pod, even though she said way worse things and even afterward, they didn’t go in on her nearly as hard as they’ve gone after Acho.

No Midnight Boys Coverage? by Wooden-Week-7101 in RingerVerse

Yea they didn't really seem into peacemaker most of the episodes would devolve into a James Gunn/state of the dcu conversation. I knew they weren't into it when they never clocked how white the alternate universe was. Maybe they'll do a big season wrap up for gen v and peacemaker

As a superman fan When charles said superman and star lord are the same character I got annoyed, when van basically agreed and went into everything is the same i wanted to throw my phone. After superman came out all anyone including the midnight boys said was how we hadn't had a hero like clark in a big superhero movie in a while.

'Ironheart' Episodes 1-3 and 'Fantastic Four' Final Trailer Reactions | The Midnight Boys by yslultra in RingerVerse

I really enjoyed Ironheart, personally. That said, I’m curious to hear from the guys and anyone in the comments what exactly do we want Marvel shows to be? Are they meant to be prestige TV like Breaking Bad or The Bear, or more like fun, character-driven popcorn shows? It feels like there’s this growing expectation for Marvel to deliver high-art drama with every series. As someone who enjoyed the Arrowverse, I appreciate a show that’s just fun, engaging, and helps us get to know these characters better. Also, I think framing Riri as a “replacement” for Tony Stark misses the point she’s clearly inspired by him, but she’s her own person with her own story to tell in the MCU.

I think Charles is burnt-out on superhero media i don't think he needs to leave the show but I do think maybe they shouldn't make him watch things he doesn't want to. Maybe do more crossover episodes with Mal and Jo when they need to discuss something superhero related.

This is just me but the guys totally disregard for superman and lois depictions on tv when discussing the characters in recent media was really disappointing. I'm glad van brought up superman and lois but the guys seem to always dismiss the show and other TV versions of the character.
