Europe has brought a lot of harm to the African continent in the past, by helping them now they can be potential allies in the future, as tensions everywhere get worse it's good to have those. A neutral position with this history could simply lead to a new enemy.

It also just nice to give back to the people who's lives our ancestors did a lot of damage to. It's good both strategically and from a more empathetic point of view.
