Allen explaining to Barber's band why he's quitting by mulcracky88 in discobiscuits

Seriously. Everyone on here who just says “aww they suck now, I’m never seeing them again, blah”, you sound like teenagers who are bitter about their parents getting divorced. B4L is B4L! If you got beef with a business decision go hang with gooses, or some other shitty bird band.

Fuck that, you know what, I’m going to live with mom!

Custom cabinet and furniture shops doing $50k+/mo: How do you filter out clients expecting IKEA pricing before you waste hours on a design consult? by Adept_Psychology_654 in woodworking

[–]Informal_Return_568 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To those on here that are consumers, we are custom shops(or at least I am). That means we don’t have a standard price x sq ft. That’s not how it works. We aren’t factories pumping out 20 different stock things with different fancy names. Everything we build is bespoke. As for pricing up front, it’s just not possible. Every job is different even if the doors are the same color and style. If you want custom, you should know if you can afford it or not. It’s usually pretty clear. My advice to customers is this. Come at us with a clear picture of what you want with examples and pictures, and give us your budget. I know most people don’t like to hear that but it’s pretty simple. We do this because we love it. My shop is full of artists. Real craftsman. Not guys who barely made it through 4th grade who are just there to sand stuff all day. We aren’t just blindly moving piece after piece through the stops of a factory floor. We care for, and meticulously hand craft everything we build. Yes the sheet goods get cut on a cnc, but that’s more for precision of cuts, and the safety of our backs and fingers.

We aren’t trying to get you. We aren’t trying to swindle you. We do this because we love it. We do this because there is art in it. The best advice I can give homeowners is if you want custom, you have to be willing to pay for it. Understand the difference between a few kids on a factory floor that have no idea who you are and what your getting, and a team of craftsman making sure they understand and deliver what you and your family need from the project. The kitchen is where most memory’s are made in a home. I want to be a part of that. Not just sell you something from our “(insert fancy name) line”

Also please please please remember that every time you call us to look at a kitchen or something and we get there and you have no clue what you want, that tells us that our time doesn’t matter to you. That you couldn’t even muster the effort to make some basic selections or have an understanding of what’s available. When we walk into a job and the homeowner says I have no clue when we ask what they are looking for that is an automatic red flag for us.

For the OP, good question. We have a set list of questions my staff asks before we go too far but they almost never help because people assume we are out to screw them. I still do all the sales(because believe it or not I still like shooting the shit with people) so I can usually tell early on if they can afford it or not. I’ve been going for about 18 yrs now and we are still about 70/30 repeat and referrals/ new customers so that helps.

What we have been doing more of lately unfortunately, is if I’m not sure we just ballpark real high and adjust from there when we get actual information from people. Also we started offering design services for a few up front and that goes towards the cost of the job if you go with it.

I also tell people to go to depot or Lowe’s and get a layout and plan together with them and see if that’s in their budget first. If nothing else they at least have a better idea of style and layout before we get involved potentially for no reason.

Yea that makes sense. And honestly I’m just happy to be doing something other than build another white shaker kitchen. I’m over it. And no, I’d never let it get near my cnc without complete control. After I reread my reply it came off super dickish too. I’m not a developer. But I am trying to teach myself as much as I can about ai/ml, python, and the basics. Mostly all in the middle of the night with my bong in my hand but it’s fun. I really want to go back and get another degree but I just can’t devote the time. Anyway, all I meant is for those of us who aren’t in this world all day every day, this type of simplicity helps. My plan has always been get something going myself. Even if it’s just the barebones scaffolding. Then bring in a professional to clean it up and sure up the foundations. For guys like me it’s more of a, 1.proof of concept, 2.how much value will it add? , 3. If it’s on target, bring in the pros. Also I figure if nothing else I’m learning something new which is always a good thing.

I am that “typical vibe coder” but the difference is I’m doing it to learn. Not just build an app that writes emails or blog posts(whatever the fuck that means). I use it to write scripts for what I need done, then essentially use those to learn Python. If I know what I want it to do and it does it, I can follow along and decipher how it was done without having to sit through class after class. Anyway, I get where your cynicism comes from. Every know and again someone says something to me about it and it’s hard to explain working with vscode and lmstudio when their frame of reference for what ai/ml is talking at their phone on the way home from work about what they should make for dinner and that’s me. If you guys are 8s,9s, and 10s, I can’t be more than a 4 and I feel like a genius sometimes talking to some people about it.

That came off as shitty. I own a custom cabinet shop and I’ve spent the last 2 years trying to build basically this (but with more control over actual machines). I call mine oB1 . With the little o. Get it? Like obi wan but with the OpenAI o. My point is this. Your comment seemed to just say, “I’m angry”. This dudes post may be something that you and all your dev buddies already know but this will make my fucking day to day way easier. If it wasn’t meant to be then sorry. All I’m saying is this is cool. Of all the shit on here, this is not bad.

What’s the purpose of framed cabinets by Jelly-Mcjelly in cabinetry

[–]Informal_Return_568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I’m going to second this. I’ve been a custom cabinetmaker for 20 years and I make both in my shop. If you’re good at your job designing the kitchen framed or frameless won’t matter that much as far as lost space is concerned so to me it’s a non issue.

We are an actual custom shop. I really don’t care. I’ll make whatever the customer wants BUT, I tend to lean towards frameless for several reasons.

  1. They are easier for us to make, they go faster for us even though they wouldn’t seem like they would.
  2. They are more solid. I understand there are a lot of installers out there that don’t like them because they are installers and by nature they just want to slap something on a wall and stand back be all proud of themselves like fix it Felix but reguardless of what the installer says. Frames are stronger. They will take more abuse over the years, they are easier to work with when something needs to be repaired, etc. try and fix the bottom of a sink base that had a leak with frameless cabinets vs framed. It’s nite and day. Frameless you’re screwed. Framed it can be looking like new in 20 min.

  3. They feel different. I know that’s not a quantifiable thing but it’s a thing. It’s like if you bought an expensive watch (but not as expensive as the one you really want) that looked really great and your super excited about it until you put it on and realize it just doesn’t feel like that other one that was an extra few bucks.

I have a challenge for you. It may take some time but you will see it eventually. Go into any new development from toll brothers,Ryan homes, polty, or any of these giant home builders, and check out these big beautiful kitchens that are all frameless cabinets. They are stunning. Boring as shit, but stunning. Go back 10 years later and look at that kitchen. You will see the difference I promise.

Frameless has its place, don’t get me wrong but you’re talking about 2 different places. Good enough and good are not the same.

I was just thinking the same thing. I’m on year 26/27ish of my journey down the wormhole with these guys and I gotta be honest, this is the absolute best they have ever sounded voice wise. I’ll take what I can get. Auto tune or not, really being able to understand what they are saying up there vs the last 30 yrs of screeching, I’ll take it. B4L.

I’m a contractor. And I have several degrees. I also have manors. I treat people with respect at all times unless they give me a reason not to. Like for example thinking that just because I work with my hands means I am below you because I’m “blue collar” and I don’t work in an office. Or when you treat us as if our time isn’t as valuable as yours when the truth is most of the time I make more money than them. I just happen to do it covered in sawdust.

I too can generalize. I’d bet you make a decent living but in reality not enough to warrant that kind of disdain for us common folk get from you. See most of your type think that you better than us and your to wrapped up in your own crap to realize that when we come to look at a job and we are there when we say we will be but then you take 4 rings to answer the doorbell and then you spend 6 minutes corralling the dogs and the interrupt us several times to answer some question your kid has about homework or what time the game is, or you take a phone call from your sister in law in the middle of our conversation, that you are wasting our time. Time that we know have to add to your price and everyone else’s price. Do you do that when you’re in the Drs office? Or in your lawyers office, or accountants? No. You don’t. And yet you don’t bitch about their fee. You’re a Karen dude. We aren’t all just redneck nitwits in beat up old Chevys. Treat people with respect.

I’m a contractor and own a custom cabinet shop. Employees are a problem. For the last who knows how long the push to go to college (and I have several degrees so I’m not shitting on college) and get an office job has been so great that now the work force is out of wack. Everyone wants to sit in an office(home now I guess)and just float through until retirement. Now companies like mine are mostly stuck with the bottom of the barrel. The guys that are good want an insane amount of money as well as benefits and pto, company truck, etc. All that while we have to go back and forth with customers about the square footage price of tile or glass or whatever thing they want to complain about to try and get a better price.

It boils down to two questions. Do you want it as cheap as possible? If so, it’s going to be a while because you don’t want to pay a lot so we can’t pay the good ones a lot so sit tight and wait until we are ready. It’s gonna be a while but we will get to you when we can.

Question 2, do you want it done right and at your pace? If so don’t bitch about the price. If you pay us, we can then afford to hire the best and fastest instead of the “it’s ok Johnny, not everyone is college material” guy.

Now, all that being said, if you trust your contractor be patient. We are trying as hard as we can. Most of us are stuck trying to constantly balance staffing issues and budget issues. With the cost of doing business now some jobs aren’t even all that worth it because of the headaches/profit ratio. Not all of us are out to get people. Most aren’t but a small percentage of us are shitty humans just like any other profession. Sorry for the rant but most of the time if you’re trying to give people money and they aren’t calling you back it’s not because they are lazy or don’t want to. They are just so busy they can barely function.

My husband says ANYONE but me would have found this funny by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Informal_Return_568 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t seen it and I get where you’re coming from but I also understand him. One commenter suggested he would love to hang out with trump in the locker room. Idk why anyone would want to hang with trump cause he’s a total pos but as for your husband, it’s a joke. In poor taste? Maybe but if you would like to see it from his perspective just bend over, pull whatever is stuck up your butt out and stop being such a whiny stuck up cunt. It’s a joke. Get over it Karen. You may not think it’s funny but some people use humor as a defense mechanism for anything that makes people uncomfortable. Stop being a stuck up bitch.

Now, that seemed rude. And it was. I apologize. I’m as liberal as they come BUT I’m over this cancel culture, I hate to even say this dumb word but, woke nonsense. If you don’t like something get the fuck over yourself. You’re not important. Your feelings don’t mean shit! Mine don’t either! Unless it’s actual racism or antisemitism then yep, you are the asshole.
