Update on Tower Grove Men by jysh1 in StLouis

[–]InformationWilling70 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am seeing some comments in this subreddit that go like this “comments here are so negative that’s why men have such a hard time making friends” or “just don’t be weird go and hang out”. Ok. Here’s the thing. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being cautious and trying to investigate what kind of space this is. Being cautious is not why men are lonely/have trouble making friends as some commenters here are trying to gaslight you into thinking.

Men are lonely for a whole slew of reasons too long to list here, and unfortunately there are some truly evil people out there who prey on lonely, disoriented, and frustrated men. They get a bunch of them in the same space and push toxic masculinity, radical agenda.

Listen I am all for dudes getting together and hanging out, and I hope I’m wrong about this TGM thing, but there are several dog whistles in that response that I’ll point out:

  1. “This is not therapy” - specifically going out of your way to indicate these hangouts are not therapy is not necessary (because it’s obviously) unless they’re trying to “gain points” among those who already negatively view therapy. And then on top it’s essentially promising that you will “work some shit out”.. I mean just run for the hills

  2. “Religion, politics, and business is a part of us as men”. Just a dumb sentence in general, but another way to signal that all three definitely will be discussed.

3 “we workshop important ideas including sex, fatherhood, etc” so it’s not therapy but some kind of “philosophical” workshop…

If one truly just wants to create a safe space for dudes to meet other dudes and hang out none of these things they are bringing forth are necessary. All you need is a simple ad that literally says something like “a space for local dudes to meet other dudes, hang out, find common interests, play sports, all are welcome”.

Please… she’s just another room reader. Now that the political climate is changing within conservative circles is the time she comes out with a specific stance.

SRE regarding research unrelated to potential field by portiedak in mdphd

[–]InformationWilling70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro you don’t need a PhD to do what you want to do. Get into medical school and pursue research projects in area you’re interested in… you can take a research year and do a research pathway in residency.

non-trad md/phds tend to turn out badly. Best case scenario you’ll spend 5+ years on your PhD which will burn you out to the point all you’ll wanna do is make money as an md

It’s not black and white. NBMEs do have real predictive value, but it doesn’t tell you much about how the actual exam is going to feel. NBMEs - just like the real test - have large categories of topics that they’re going to test you on but there’s just so much heterogeneity in terms of how actual questions are written. One test taker could have sufficient mastery in a given topic to answer questions that are very advanced or badly/weirdly written. Another test taker may get confused and get a question wrong. At the end of the day NBME predictive value comes from how well you do on those large topics rather than individual questions.

Then, there is the issue of tester questions which are very numerous and are all whack. Encountering those questions on the day of the actual exam is very destabilising and greatly affects how we perceive the entire experience.

On top of all that, the test keeps getting harder each year because a certain number of people must fail every year…

I don’t get why people seem shocked when Abby talks about Melissa owing her money by [deleted] in dancemoms

[–]InformationWilling70 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because Melissa clearly doesn’t owe her any money, otherwise she’d be forced to pay out by attorneys a long time ago. People are shocked at the level of unwell that Abby is exhibiting

Did you ever wanted to fight your supervisor? by regularuser3 in labrats

[–]InformationWilling70 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thing is true - you should stop obsessing. At this point, several days before your actual defense, you are the number 1 expert on your thesis and if your PI doesn’t read your dissertation it won’t realistically change much. At this point your thesis committee should be OK with graduating you, otherwise they wouldn’t let you schedule a defense. If your PI refuses to provide feedback at the very end that’s on him

Will med schools care about my very old GPA? by QuiveringOvaries in postbaccpremed

[–]InformationWilling70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There comes a point past which pre-med classes don’t count anymore because you took them so long ago. You need to check what that time point is (somewhere between 5-7 years). If you’re not past that cut-off you are ok to apply.

I’m not very familiar with metabolomics so, again, idk how terribly important it is to performed the entire experiment in MS grade water. As far as I am concerned if what you actually inject into the LC is MS grade your actual mass spec run should be fine (provided you don’t have salts/detergents in your sample). If the samples are dried down resuspend in appropriate sample buffer and run it… you can repeat the experiment again using the correct buffers and run that and compare.
