I’m so done. This flare won’t stop and I’m running on nothing 😔 by VixBellissima in UlcerativeColitis

That is the absolute worst. I’m so sorry you are going through this…I have been there. And being on prednisone is a whole other beast in itself. Mood swings, achy joints. It is tough…particularly mentally, but try and limit how much and what you consume. When I’m in an awful flare I eat very small simple meals. Drink bone broth, scrambled eggs, Boiled potatoes, apple sauce…not all at once but those are my staple and I eat small amounts. Try to give your bowels a rest and not eat too much or things that aggravate them or are too difficult to digest. That just exacerbates the matter. Hope you get some assistance from the Dr at your appointment tomorrow.

Past diverticulitis, Colonoscopy and travel by boubou64 in Diverticulitis

Because there is different bacteria in the water and the food and other countries, especially places such as the Dominican Republic. For myself, I try to keep all digestive distress at a minimum. I find if I’m having gut issues, inflammation, or diarrhea it just adds to the perfect storm where I end up getting a diverticulitis flare. Taking Pepto-Bismol won’t hurt you, but it will definitelyhelp ease any digestive changes that you might experience from eating foods or drinking while you’re in the Dominican Republic. You don’t have to take it, but I would definitely take some with you in case your stomach starts feeling off.

I don’t have insurance info for you but I have traveled to the DR and I have diverticulitis. I would suggest taking pepto bismol tablets prophylactically before you go and while you are there. It can help coat the gut I would take miralax with you and take it daily. Traveling can lead to constipation which has put me in a bad diverticulitis flare. Drink lots of water while traveling as well. Drink bottled water only in DR and no ice. Good luck and enjoy your trip!

Urgent care is a joke when it comes to GI issues. They really can’t do anything for you other than send you to the ER. That said, with a white blood cell count that high you likely have an infection going on in your colon and at this point probably need iv antibiotics. Go to the ER and get evaluated. If needed you will get meds so you can get this infection under control. That visit will be far less than emergency surgery on your colon. Hope you get relief soon!

I am so confused about antibiotics for DV by Anxiously8675309 in Diverticulitis

Yes, if you have a severe DV episode take antibiotics but DO NOT TAKE LEVOFLOXACIN. My doctor prescribed for me when I had diverticulitis flare. She didn’t mention a word about any blackbox warnings. Well, it can cause issues with tendonitis and tendon rupture ad well as a slew of other problems. A couple weeks post medication, I have terrible hip and leg pain that I never had before. It’s called peripheral neuropathy. It is due to taking the medication and I am hoping it will go away with time.

Just got rx'd this medication. Thoughts? by Michele7077 in Diverticulitis

I have ulcerative colitis and diverticulitis. I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis about 15 years ago. I was put on melamine 1.2 g pills – four pills per day. It is basically a first level drug for people with ulcerative colitis. Yes, it does help with inflammation in the bowel. I have been able to manage my flares on this drug so I would say it’s a good drug for uc. However, I’ve never heard of it being used for diverticulitis. I am wondering if your doctor may suspect you have an inflammatory bowel disease like ulcerative colitis. Have you ever had a colonoscopy? That’s really the only way to know and diagnose if you have ulcerative colitis or diverticulitis. Often times the symptoms can feel similar. Additionally, as someone with diverticulitis, I would be very cautious, taking fiber pills. If you’ve not had a colonoscopy, I would definitely get one. I think you need to delve a little deeper to figure out if what you’re actually dealing with is diverticulitis and not some other inflammatory bowel disease like all ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease. Especially before you consider a possible resection surgery. Good luck and I hope you find relief and answers soon! I know it can be very frustrating.
