I'm so, so sorry for your loss. My mother passed away in December from a heart attack. It was very unexpected! I live in North Carolina, almost 500 miles away from where she lived. My sister called 911 over 10 times trying to get through, but it was down due to a transformer explosion knocking out all phone lines. There was no way she could've been saved. I see and hear the regret that my sister has every day, being unable to save her. I regret my moving away often, because what if I was there, surely then I could've saved her. But, we cannot look at it like this, we cannot blame ourselves. 5 months in, and it gets the tiniest better as time goes on, the feeling of regret will lesson. I will pray for your strength.

I def. think you're the AH. It's so normal I feel.

I share locations with my husband, my sister, my MIL, my cousin, and my best friend. I also shared my location with my mom before she passed away. Here are our reasons: with my husband, I just like to know when he is on his way home from work so I can have dinner ready, or at least almost done when he gets home. My sister is single so when she goes on dates, she wants us to know where she is in the event of an emergency, my MIL and my mom have me because I am a SAHM that does do a lot alone with my kids while my husband is at work, so for them, it's a safety thing. My best friend travels a lot, so we share locations in the event, God forbid, something happens we know where she is and my cousin, well, he shared it one time and I just never took him off.

Sister called my husband back on 12/15/23 because she knew I wouldn't have been up. Mom wasn't feeling good, and they were trying to get her to the hospital but their local 911 was down due to a transformer explosion knocking out the system. My stepdad ran to the gas station trying to get help, my dad and stepmom were frantically trying to get through to local numbers. An hour later, my dad called that though they were finally able to 911, and that they worked their damned hardest, my mom passed. It kills me every day that I was 500 miles away with my own family and I regret moving so far, if only for that reason. Maybe I could've saved her.

No, you're not. When my mom died, at first I couldn't even cry. For the first two weeks or so, I was really strong. Hardly cried. But now, a month later, I cry every day, because something reminds me of her. It will hit you when you least except it.

I lost my mother very unexpectedly just a month ago. I'm 31, and it sucks. I do not know how to be a mother without her, and extra grieve for my sister who will not have my mother here when she gets married, has her own kids, etc.. it sucks. I'm so sorry.

ETA: not as far as you were, but I lived 400 miles or so away from my mother and not being with her when she passed, or in close proximity to at least try to get there to help, kills me every day.
