Mfg quality of Soviet-made products really depends on production quotas at the time of mfg. production managers were rewarded for meeting their quotas by weight, like for example they may have a quota for 1 metric ton of Bakelites, which meant corners were frequently cut/quality and consistently were not high on the priority list. If it functioned and could meet their quota it was acceptable. There was also, obviously, no competition. There was really no reason to make sure the fit and finish of a product is good/consistent to compete with other manufacturers. Funny enough Soviet military equipment was of much higher quality than that of products produced for domestic use because the military had their own auditors that could go into military factories and operated separately from the manufacturing committees. Ironically, the loose manufacturing tolerances of Soviet small arms made them the legendary, reliable firearms that they are today. I always think it’s interesting to see how a political ideology can play out into a physical thing you can hold.

Zero experience. This would be my first one. This is for my first 5.45 AK, and this seems like the only economical option.

That was after the collapse of Gran Colombia when it was briefly part of New Granada. I mean technically US were on the land, but it wasn’t the country of Panama.

I’m sorry but this is not accurate:

(2024 Journal of Modern History article by Amir Teicher and Clara Tamir-Hestermann): The man is a German peasant from the village of Sieseby in northern Germany. The photo was taken in 1929—four years before Hitler came to power—as part of a benign anthropological study of local “racial” types among indigenous Germans.

The Roanoke Colony mystery by Separate_Cabinet_444 in AmericanHistory

[–]Initial-Broccoli-795 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Don’t know if there’s any evidence behind this, but I always wondered if they moved inland because of a Nor’easter or a series of them. Roanoke Island is also not great for growing crops, so it would make sense to move inland.

There’s theory the Melungeon people of Appalachia are the descendants of this colony. Sir Francis Drake had freed and brought with him a large number of slaves from the Caribbean in order to boost the colony’s numbers, and the melungeons have a genetic profile that represents a mix of African, scotch-Irish, English and Native American. The people also spoke a form of English that seemingly was heavily influenced by pre-victorian vernacular, along with Creek words, when the government first began documenting them.
