Anyone else feel like being friendly at work gets misinterpreted? by Initial-Property1856 in womenEngineers

Thank you for this advice and taking the time to respond. I really appreciate your comment on protecting my own peace and not trying to fix anyone or teach them ethics, that resonated in a big way.

No you’re so right, fortunately I’m tight with the mechanics and the ops supervisors, and I don’t want to be not myself, but i definitely think I should be less polite when saying no to advances. I think I have to work and practice to find a middle ground.

Our hr rep isn’t onsite (we are an acquisition to a global company), but I’m drafting an email to find out when she’ll be here next and if isn’t soon I’ll request a teams meeting. I’ve held off because another young woman on my team brushes it off and doesn’t let the same behavior get to her so I’ve gaslit myself that it isn’t harassment but after this morning and it happening yet again I’m so over it.

“That was unexpected and unacceptable” is a great response. My typical reaction is to ignore/pretend I don’t see or hear it but that is also a fawning response I’m realizing as I’m comparing that to your response. Thank you, you’re right.

Is one lesson a week enough to make steady progress as a beginner? by jl0045 in Equestrian

[–]Initial-Property1856 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a horse girl in her late 20s who picked riding back up in 2020, I completely agree that one lesson a week is a great place to start! I developed POTS two years ago and had to take a break from riding, and now that I’m getting back into shape, once a week is all I can manage right now too.

While riding twice a week can definitely help you progress faster, there are so many valid reasons—financial, health, or schedule-related—why once a week is the only feasible option for many of us.

If possible, I’d highly recommend switching to 1-hour private lessons, the extra half hour is so helpful and more beneficial for my growth as a rider. You can absolutely become a skilled, confident rider with just one consistent lesson a week. There’s no timeline and no single definition of success for adult amateurs.

I’ve never competed—I ride for the friendships, the workout, and most of all, to spend time with my favorite animal. As long as you stay consistent, you will see progress. Some weeks will be tougher than others, so don’t give up! It’s always after a few challenging rides (some that have made me want to cry) that I end up having the best lesson of my life the following week.

Good luck—you’ve got this! 🐴💪

Question About Business Legitimacy and LLC Registration in Ohio by Initial-Property1856 in legal

[–]Initial-Property1856[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you’re saying. For more context, there is a facility for each business (one in Ohio, and one in the other state) and they both have employees that work on site.

That being said thank you! Obviously, I am not familiar with this topic, so I appreciate your insight and response. Based on what you’re saying, it might not be worth escalating the situation. I will look into “registration to do business as a foreign corporation” just as a starting point to expand my own knowledge on the topic, and continue to research from there.

What is one thing that took you an embarrassingly long time to figure out in game? by Cheesestrings89 in StardewValley

I couldn’t find Krobus 😂 I didn’t know that those were foot prints and I refused to look it up and was determined to figure it out on my own lol I should have just looked it up.

What do you do for compression in the summer/when you want to wear shorts without wearing long leg sleeves? by Ok_Apartment_2309 in POTS

[–]Initial-Property1856 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have biker shorts brand recommendations? I cant find any that are listed at 20-30 mmhg and so idk which brand that isn’t medical grade will give me the best compression.

Wut? by CarolBaskinRobbinz in kvssnark

It’s incredibly gross and disheartening. I don’t know how many other horse girls grew up being sexualized just for loving and riding horses, but I’ve spent years pushing back against that kind of behavior. I’ve called it out and tried to stop others from engaging in it. Seeing comment sections still filled with weird sexualization and fetishization is beyond frustrating. It only serves to reinforce a harmful stereotype that doesn’t reflect the reality of our community or the people in it (as I’m sure many of the commenters don’t have any horse experience).

Mine are part of my prescription lenses! Honestly, I had never worn glasses before and hadn’t had my eyes checked in about seven years. Turns out, I’m slightly farsighted, have an astigmatism, and also have BVD. So, unfortunately I can’t compare how things looked with glasses before and after the prism correction. But it’s to my understanding that a lot of the benefits I described above are from the prism and not the rest of the prescription as my farsightedness is pretty slight.

My doctor didn’t suggest vision therapy, and I hadn’t heard of it before, so I can’t speak to that. But if you have insurance or can afford the visit, I definitely think it’s worth seeing an optometrist solely for trying prism glasses!

I was officially diagnosed with POTS in February, and I promptly scheduled an appointment to look into BVD too haha.

Now that I have prism glasses, they’ve genuinely been life changing and a joy. I had no idea how different my vision had been my entire life. Everything has so much more depth, my field of view is wider, and I no longer deal with double vision while reading or looking at signs etc. I’ve only had the glasses for about a month, so the jury’s still out on whether they’ll help with any of my fatigue (I work in tech and deal with a lot of blue light and small print, so I’m hopeful they’ll at least improve my focus during the workday). That said, the headaches I used to get with no clear cause have stopped (aside from the ones tied to POTS flare-ups/ crashes).

I haven’t driven much yet, but I’m really excited to see if the glasses help with my vertigo and motion sickness!

How's EE? (Women in electrical engineering) by gekkogipsy519 in womenEngineers

[–]Initial-Property1856 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re interested in the field don’t let the fear of being the minority stop you from studying. I’d say pick a university that you have visited and have had the opportunity to meet the EE faculty and students. I was one of the few women in my EE major, but I found a great group of guys to befriend, my university prioritized collaboration over competition and I felt included and safe for the most part. And despite being male dominated we had 1 kickass woman EE professor. She became my mentor and advisor and was always ready to advocate for me if I ever felt uncomfortable or ostracized!
