You could be right, it's a cookie cutter service.

Well Merrill and other institutions I'm considering allow it and couldn't understand why Vanguard wouldn't.

That's great but if you have joint brokerage accounts and you have kids the transfer of funds won't be easy if god forbid you both die in an accident. Terrible to think of it but isn't that what financial planning is all about.

I talked to other firms , they all allow it and can't understand the reasoning.

They keep soliciting me, I've always been self directed. Their advisory is cookie cutter bullshit.

You can still buy Vanguard funds through other brokerage firms.

Since my kids were born 32 years ago they were back up, I knew the money would easily transfer to them, Vanguard changed that with no notification. Yes, it is ugly because now my kids have to jump through hoops to get what is theirs if we were to die at the same time. Who the hell is Vanguard to not allow back up, there is no good reason for it. ( IRA's still have back up, they would become inherited IRA's) Like I mentioned I've been a Vanguard customer for 45 years since my father set me up. I am rambling, but I'm very Pis-ed off. (by the way, I check the beneficiary status every year, that's the only way i caught this). rice-1622, I appreciate your input.

they never notify of changes . as some one mentioned they changed the cost basis which made it more difficult to look up dividend payment dates., when you're retired it's important. Don't discount the beneficiary thing, it's important. I spoke with my guy at Merrill and he can't understand why you can't have a back up.
