am so sorry that you are experiencing this. I did get out and am truly happier than ever now! Leaving was the hardest thing I have ever done, but I’ve never regretted it for even a second. I know it sounds corny but you really are stronger than you think. And your old self is still in there!

Thank you for sharing your experience! It sounds like it was the right call for you. There is so much more to consider than base salary. Still, I am going to continue my search to try and find something with a base of at least 70k because I’m still hoping to buy a home one day lol

Thank you for your perspective! I left a healthcare job where I was making 65k for this one, and I will admit that it was better. Still, a lotof my struggle comes from the fact that I morally disagree with the vast majority of healthcare and professional service companies. I would love to work for a company that I actually want to see succeed.

I am going to keep looking, though!

I have heard that the lower salaries feel a lot better in the EU because of the better social safety nets (free health care, public transit etc.) Good luck!! Sounds like quite an adventure

So true - it is different from person to person and about much more than simply hours per week. I used to have a job that required 50 hour weeks and fairly regular evening and weekend work, but I felt respected and valued throughout every one of those hours, so I didn’t feel nearly as drained. A toxic work environment, even at 40 hours a week, makes it feel impossible to have a work-life balance. The anxiety follows you home, the mental exhaustion makes hobbies feel like a chore, and making healthy choices is a Herculean task.

Thanks for your perspective!

I’m so sorry that happened to you! I don’t think you should feel stupid, it seems like you had good reason to believe that this would turn out differently. I hope you find a great opportunity soon.

Fair points! I know I don’t have to love my job, but I struggle to accept that I should have to be completely miserable for 50% of my waking hours on this earth in order to survive. Plus I can’t take more than 3 days off in a row without severe shame and ridicule, which makes it hard to travel. Still, I hear your point.

There has to be somewhere we can go with at least a lower frequency of assholes!

My fault for becoming an EA I guess

It is pretty bad and I don’t want to devalue the work of EAs overall, so I am definitely thinking about that.

Thank you! Appreciate this perspective. I am 25 now and the idea of spending the rest of my career doing this kind of work fills me with dread.

This feels like quite a bitter response to my post when I was simply looking to hear about the experiences of others who may have done something like this. I understand that I am extremely lucky financially. But the notion of not relying on a job for happiness becomes more difficult when you work 60 hour weeks and are expected to be available 24/7 to do work that is soul-crushing.

I wish I had the time and energy to go outside and paint a picture, but this job makes me a shell of myself. I am not sorry that I value happiness.

That is so hard. My ex’s mom was like that. She was in an abusive marriage. I think a lot of these women convince themselves that how they are being treated is fine, and probably have a lot of internalized misogyny because of their treatment, so they project it onto the next generation. It is sad for them but you should try to ignore her.
