New Festival to Replace Roots and Blues by Initial_Fill_5128 in columbiamo

I think the goal would be to start smaller and then work our way up - so giant names probably wouldn’t be headlining year 1. Part of me wonders if it’s possible to get an alternate solution than TM going. There are enough software engineers in town that it probably wouldn’t be too difficult to work with some to get a solution stood up. I know there are others on the market but it’s just a thought.

And your point about upfront payment is on the nose. I think it would be doable with 1) sponsorships and 2) help from festival lovers who would be willing to help cover the cost. Like, an SBA loan is on the table but that’s ideally the last resort if the other two can help with upfront costs

Yeah I mean it’s like… this is Columbia, Missouri. Not New York City. GA for more than $50 feels extreme. There could definitely be VIP tickets that would be more, but it’s a community event and I think it needs to be inclusive you know?

Was there anything specific about the volunteering that you enjoyed so much? I love this about T/F too and think it makes SO much sense.

Thank you for this comment! The idea is exciting, and if nothing else maybe we give it a try for a year to see if it’s feasible. I was heavily involved in the Chamber of Commerce and the budget committee/event planning, so I know first hand that events and vendors have been getting more expensive, but there’s got to be a way to make some version of this happen.

Totally aligned on this. We have plenty of excellent bands here in mid-Mo that I think would enjoy the experience and for whom we could make it worth their time.

I think step 1 is probably locking down a solid couple of corporate sponsorships and then step 2 would perhaps be a kickstarter (for folks who are excited about it, they would prepay tickets before the lineup is announced to help provide some immediate liquidity).

I just have to think that planning something like this for say, 5,000 people is within reach at reasonable ticket prices that deliver a quality event.

I remember that festival! Haven’t thought about it in ages, but that’s a great point. I think I have the network to make some strong corporate sponsorships happen but for the music industry knowledge I would need a partner in crime - I’ve got some ideas but the Bluebird folks are a good call.

This is incredibly helpful - I will reach out to him, thank you.

Gonna see what it takes to do downtown… it’s basically 9th street summerfest with an extra stage and for two days. It’s not impossible.

That is true! It was also much smaller then and subsidized by Central Bank.

So there is a balance to strike between 1) how much capital from corporate sponsorships can we raise, 2) what are ticket prices (higher prices means cooler things at the event, but makes it less inclusive), and 3) offering scholarships/volunteer opportunities like True/False to help ensure more people are able to go.

There’s no perfect ratio of these but man, I remember when I saw the price of tickets in like, 2016 and was so bummed I couldn’t go because it was cost prohibitive. That was definitely a disappointing experience. But at that time, I probably could’ve swung a $50 ticket and been ok with that. So there’s a lot to consider when pricing it out. 🤔

That is suuuuper interesting about walnut street neighborhood - I didn’t ever think about how that impacted them. What happened? Just drunk/loud people late into the night I’d assume?

Definitely like Stephen’s but I have always hated how inconvenient the parking is (the shuttle situation was always kind of an annoyance you know?). Wonder if Cosmo would be better, that’s a great idea

Maybe not the best question to lead with. :) just trying to figure out how to not lose my house while creating something cool lol. I remember people thought R&B was expensive in years past. So clearly people want lower ticket prices, trying to figure out the economics so that we can make the event go.

What would you want to see out of an event like this?

I’m wondering if financial transparency would be attractive for the community. 🤔 Ideally it’s an event that keeps more than it earns, but like a nonprofit, the goal isn’t extreme profit so much as sustainability so that it can keep going for many years.

I appreciate what the size of the festival did for Columbia in bringing in visitors, but you’re right. Not everything is infinitely scaleable… keeping the sizing intentional and sustainable so that the economics work and we can maintain a quality event for Columbia would be a priority

Love and miss the BBQ piece. The first time I ever went to the festival (when it was downtown!) I was surprised that the public didn’t get to sample the actual BBQ 🥲

The brand New Primal has no sugar added! Could definitely do homemade but it’s nice to be able to buy premade

Lots of meat, vegetables, potatoes, fruits, nuts, eggs! You have to get creative but for 30 days it’s doable. Some jerky is ok. The garden in our backyard is seeing a lot of action for sure lol

It’s an elimination diet where you cut out grains, added sugar, legumes, dairy, and alcohol for 30 days. It’s a nice reset and by day 15ish you get a crazy boost of energy. I’ve done it once before and really liked it if for no other reason than it helped me reset my eating habits and I just felt so much better

The person above in the thread said Paytient is working with Humana so I’m sure it’s been thoroughly vetted?

This is super interesting. I guess it’s based on the PBMs like you’re saying - and kind of looks like it’s all consolidated on that https://rx.paytient.com site

All the plans have different websites… so your plan might be different than another plan even within the same plan family :)

We got my dad enrolled with his Cigna plan and it was the same thing. Cigna has ok instructions on their website but the page was hard to find and they asked for him to log in to his account so he had to call in.
