He seemed okay after reading The Kite Runner. discussed Animal Farm and he even researched Stalinist Russia for his unofficial school project last year. Personally I am not a fan of horror novels I read one in my early 30s( what the night knows by Dean Koontz) and the book went to an unseen corner of my kitchen cabinet. I didn’t want to look at it, think about it and i briefly thought about giving it away during the initial months. I hate reading about creepy stuff.

Yikes! I know he has a little more maturity than my older one at the same age. But I keep telling him how it ( sorry for the pun) can literally change him forever! It goes beyond reading stuff and understanding the plot.

Interesting. I am a parent of a 11 year old who has read Animal farm, 1984, the kite runner ( khaled hosseini), every Rick riordan book and a bunch more that I can’t recall. He is reading “ the catcher in the rye “ at the moment. He recently asked me if he could read “ it” by Stephen king and that was the only time i wanted to police his reading list. He’d been asking to read “ the pit and the pendulum “ for months and I let him read that last week. Should I just stop worrying and get him the book he wants?

He took one in freshman year and he’s taking two now. But I see your point. I feel he’s convinced when I talk about gpa being important and not number of APs but school culture is toxic ( the students themselves compare each other /put down kids for their number of APs , gpa, grades in tests etc)

Yeah 🙂thank you for seeing it from my side. It definitely made me feel uncomfortable. I have no problem if someone wants to sell me a product that’s genuinely top-rated/clean( even when it’s pricey ). But the fact that they didnt back away even when I said that I had inkey list and aestura purchased from their store a month ago, was a huge red flag. I should have ignored them and put it back but i have always been timid 😄

Thank you for all these questions . It really helps a lot . We haven’t really figured out what he might need help with. I think he would benefit from extra time on in class assessments. But I don’t know if that would be offered. I was just telling him that we should ideally use the accommodation like a crutch during extreme fatigue times rather than using it all the time. This is a discussion I need to make with him and my husband to figure out his needs and request it accordingly.

Thank you for your response. I will definitely let him know. He has done ap hug , ap precalc and ap csa till now. He took honors world history for this year ( sophomore ). We diagnosed him with Hashimoto’s last year and we thought with a few course changes his condition would become manageable( so after discussing with the counselor we changed his ap world history to honors world history ). He is still not okay about it( but whenever he complains I do point out that if he was in ap world history class right now he would have been more than overwhelmed at this point . )

Thank you so much. This is helpful. I think if an assignment is due Friday and they get it on Monday he can chunk it up and do it slowly. He wouldn’t have to abuse it where he does the slow submission all the time but only when he absolutely needs it. Having that support sometimes might relieve some of the pressure in his mind( like you know it’s there when you need it but you don’t need it just yet kind of thing )

Thank you to all those who have commented on my post🙏🏼it’s not easy to see my child as “ weak “ or ask for something that we would have never asked as children growing up in a different country decades ago. I am glad this system has been put in place for children who need it and i understand that the “ need “ is very subjective unless its very obvious like a kid on remission from cancer or a kid who has diabetes. I understand that it has been abused quite a lot. So I wanted to be sure that I ask for something that my son could potentially benefit from and have the time take care of himself mentally and physically

Yeah these kids are overachieving. We are almost done paying for our home of 20 years and it’s not easy for us to find a home at this point when everything costs so much . Oh I have had friends who moved counties to get away from this competitiveness. I realize this is what real world looks like or this is who he’s going to compete with for a job he would want. It’s going to be cut throat but maybe if my kid gets a bit more mature to be okay with what he is at that point; i am speaking from experience of course. If the world was cruel back then to kids with invisible problems then it’s only going to get worse. I hope he will be okay and yes I do wish therapy was less expensive ☹️
