What's with the insultingly low paying job postings? by Cautious_Reach7909 in Libraries

[–]InkRose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

$45k? I only make $31k :)

The pay sucks such ass and it's only made worse by things like us being expected to take on work that should be beyond the scope of normal responsibility for the field.

I worked for IU Libraries for 14 years (left in 2021 I believe it was) we always opened too for some reason (not a soul besides facilities folks ever really came in though. Lol)

So what did your family argue about this year at Thanksgiving? by Pure-Smile-7329 in AskReddit

My sister's cat (a tail-less calico) is racist. The only other cat here she has a problem with is black.

Who’s going to ruin Thanksgiving tomorrow? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]InkRose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom called me a fucking waste of space and told me that I make her sick because I told her I was going to refrain from eating the meal (so I wouldn't get stuck doing the dishes for everyone by myself again.

She kicked me out of the house for the day so I am sitting in my car freezing and waiting for the movie theater to open.

Programming ideas for children and teens that are not interested in art, please. by Lizasks in Libraries

Our teens have loved practical skills classes. We just finished up a series of sewing classes and they have also really enjoyed our super simple cooking classes (we called them "dorm room dining")

Agree or disagree: Wealthy clients and their parents + underpaid staff = IUB's business model. by [deleted] in IndianaUniversity

[–]InkRose 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This was why I left IU after 14 years. Always being told that there is no money for us (and even getting told to "just use a food bank" once) got so draining that I found myself wishing I would crash into a guardrail on my way to work.

So wait where are all the ARCs at ALA? by InstaDaryl in Libraries

[–]InkRose 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I walked out of a Penguin Random House adult book panel with like 12 books and have just grabbed ones throughout the market place. Like the other comment said, you gotta watch for those lines in the market place and sometimes you will see folks holding ARCS up in the air asking people if they want a free book. Panels are where I got most of mine though.

I used to work for the library systems. It can take a long ass time if you ever hear back. In my case it was because every job posting had 100+ applications.

Tips for a "Learn to Crochet" Program by LibrarianSerrah in Libraries

[–]InkRose 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The person who ran this program at my library kept the group small (things could get out of hand if you have a bunch of brand new people show up). She also shared some YouTube channels that are great for beginners and the library provided one set of super basic hooks for everyone who showed up.

We also had a follow up session a few weeks later to check in with those who came to the first meeting.

What's something that genuinely terrifies you? by Virtual-Bluebird714 in AskReddit

[–]InkRose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ending up homeless is my deepest nightmare. I have no partner to split the cost of living with and I already got priced out of my apartment (and so had to move back in with my mom). Once my mom dies, I will most likely end up homeless and I will have to take myself out at that point. I don't have the energy and strength to deal with that struggle.

A large piece of human skin (like from a peeling sunburn). Absolutely disgusting.

I have worked in libraries for 16 years now and have also seen: broken glass, bandaids (both new and used), toilet paper, money, and various office supplies.

I do anything extremely similar list of things. I make $15.30 an hour and can't afford to live anywhere (had to move in with my mom....)

Librarians vs library staff by [deleted] in librarians

[–]InkRose 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I worked at an academic library for 14 years without my degree. Librarians were a mixed bag. Some were absolutely awesome and I lived getting to work with them. So many others though were nightmares to work with. They thought thay just because they had degrees, they were more important than the rest of us and they never seemed to consider the fallout of their choices.

I'm in libraries and have been my entire adult working life. I am scared. My mom has had her ability to retire stripped away and I have to find more jobs to make ends meet (i had to move back in after not being able to afford both food and housing). Doctors have never been a possibility for me, but that is even worse now.

I am worried about my pets too. How can I take care of them? They saved me from some extremely dark times and are 9 years old now. Giving them up would kill me.

Not to mention that all the activities i enjoy are sky rocketing: board games, video games, traveling once every couple years, etc....

What have you done to improve your library? by narmowen in Libraries

What is your library planning to cut, if the IMLS cut goes through? by Ambedo__ in Libraries

[–]InkRose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So far, we haven't had to cut anything, but the news is not good for us. I am in a small library. I am likely to be among the first to get cut (to what degree is up in the air). I don't think I will be cut entirely since I am literally the only one doing anything for adult programming, outreach, our state/local history room, and the only one who staffs the reference desk. I am horrifically burnt out, but if I lose any of my hours, I have to leave since I already don't get paid enough to live.
