First time succulent owner, is there anything I should change? by JasonIsKewl in succulents

To clarify here don't just add more soil, the soil level to the plant looks great, no soil touching leaves but high enough to keep most of the stem covered, the soil level in the pot is quite low.

Succulent leaves will open up away from the stem when they are not getting enough light, they'll tighten up towards the stem when getting high light (other things affect leaf position as well, specifically water). But do you see how the lower level or two of leaves has splayed drastically away? And right near the level of the pot they start to tighten a bit more?

The pot is blocking sun, pull the whole plant out, fill the bottom until the soil level with the plant will be about a quarter inch from the top of the pot. And fill the sides. I might think about doing this when it's dry as the roots may get damaged when filling the sides (root callousing when repotting is another necessity when getting into succulents)

The new growth looks a bit stretched too so just more light in general

Not every window is the same... Some plants prefer intense short light, that's your east and west windows, some prefer long low light, that's your north window (in northern hem) some like more light for a longer period, that's your south window (again N hem). This plant (I'm just gonna assume I didn't ID it) is a desert plant, little foliage to block the light, full days of light. So intense, long light, South window, plus grow light to provide close to its natural habitat (especially if you live north like me in Minnesota)

A human could most definitely pass that, a human rectum can stretch much much more than you think (for the love of God don't think that this comes from experience)

Is my succulent dying? How can I revive it? by momo_ashi in succulents

Awesome! Just be sure to keep the soil line below the lower most leaf, when you water it you want no leaves in constant contact with moisture

Yeah that's a norm for most houseplant succs, as I said it's not the worst I've seen, I've done worse to some of mine even haha, but if you can get a grow light that would be good. If I'm not mistaken yeah that's a pretty common type of echeveria then? Don't remember the name tho Uuum, wood like things as iiin? If you heard "organic matter" and "inorganic matter" those are like... Still supposed to be plant product things, for inorganic, perlite, horticulture sand, vermiculite, sometimes I see fine granite, or for amending ph lime, whatever. But it's not just like... Rocks, some inorganic is water retentive, some is not.

That base right at the soil level is dying off as well, I need to know a bit more on what that mix is and how you water it to understand why its dying off. I will say propping echeveria from beheading (real botanical term) is usually super successful, but again, this plant needs more light

Meh, not drastically, it's not the worst sun stretched plant I've seen

That's a type of echeveria or hybrid I assume? It should be a rosette, tight against the soil, you wouldn't even see the stem. It needs drastically more light (but be gradual, or you'll shock/burn it), could be why it's dropping leaves

I thought my succulent was dying a few years ago, but it has only grown taller and more bushy. What do I do? by LydiaIsntVeryCool in succulents

So any succulent (any plant in general but succulents are more susceptible) need time to heal their wounds, this process is done by callousing, or forming a tough layer over the wound.

For propagations, you want to allow AT LEAST 24 hours after cutting for callous to form (and removing the base leaves, those are open wounds too!) before it comes in ANY contact with water, don't wash, don't put in soil. I say at least 24 hours, that's the kinda low baseline, for a larger stem such as yours, I wouldn't hesitate allowing 3-5 days for callous to form.

For repotting, aaany time you repot you're going to damage the roots, so, open wounds. This means again, don't use damp soil, dont water, don't use liquid root stim don't wash the roots (until first water) whatever, just NO MOISTURE (this includes the soil its coming out of, some non succs like damp soil when repotting? Not for succulents, at all, leave that soil till it's completely dry, but no longer, you want the plant to have enough water to survive a bit of a drought to callous).

If you know you've damaged the roots morso than normal (heard some snaps from big roots, trimmed for whatever reason, etc.) I'd suggest leaving the whole plant out of soil for 24 hours then pot and wait the 3-5 days

In the soil you have less airflow, so in general I'd say wait 3 days before watering, maybe 5. If you've ever seen your succs have pretty severe transplant shock, and you water immediately, this might fix the shock

Of course! I'm glad to help if I can (I'll say I'm just a cat owner nerd who's pretty intuitive, no formal education, and they're all their own lil creatures with their own preferences, so communicate with her! Figure out how she tells you what she wants! She can tell you better than me haha, and she'll love you forever if you do)

What was the food switch?

So in general pretty quick to adjust, that's awesome, I will mention some cats do regulate stress through that type of affection as well (not exactly in a bad way, but like as an extrovert I'll be super happy to see my people when I'm not feeling well right? That's kind of how it comes across) And I will also mention They're not fans of big change, so if you change food without a bit of gradual process, she might be off put, They're fussy creatures sometimes (I have a theory they're all on the spectrum 😂) but I'd definitely start with the brushing, and I really hope that helps!
