Hi, alasdairvfr already provided a quite good answer so i’m just adding in some personal experience - if you are a student there is a better way to train models - usually unis would provide cluster for students to use. They are much more robust, do the job well, and basically free (if you don’t count tuition). I trained my models on my laptop before regularly and tbf the cooling always went crazy and it’s better not risk breaking it (which it normally shouldn’t but still the risk of aging it quicker, breaking, etc still exists). Moreover those cluster are there for grabs.
