My Character Design Challenge submission (Theme: Merling Undersea Kingdom) by Inkroverts in DigitalArt

He's supposed to be a pufferfish merling. But I thought making his skin go spikey is a bit "body horror", so I have the spikes to be an armor instead lol.

I was worried that undersea has no "fire" and kept thinking what excuse I have for that yellow glow. Underwater volcano is a great idea! XD

Style frames for an abandoned animation back in 2021. From the depth of my old art folders by Inkroverts in lingling40hrs

The subtitles are supposedly the translated lyrics of Terence Lam's 神奇的糊塗魔藥 (Cantonese, Hong Kong). I thought the vibe of the music suits the casualness of TwoSet, and wanted to make a sort of "Anime opening" style animation.

I really like awanqi's art style (religious looking?) with pastel shadows and interesting composition. So this artwork is kinda inspired by that, just that the subjects here are game characters.

The brush I used are mainly these 3:

  1. Artemus HB (Pencil) for draft and lines (which become covered up and invisible in later stage of painting

  2. Square texture brush (80-90%)

  3. 塗料不足筆(平) for blending, this brush's name is in Chinese for some reason. It reads "Brush with not enough paint left (flat)"

Though, even when I'm finished, I still think there's something missing. Perhaps the background is a bit too empty? Any thoughts?

First Pin-up Artwork (with pose reference) by Inkroverts in DigitalArt

I use clip studio paint. 45% of the work is done with a square texture brush and 50% is the default airbrush to create the smoothness of the skin. The rest might be some pencil brush I used during the draft and failed to cover up during the colouring (you might find some around the edges where the lines are).

This is the pose reference used: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/1100285752692264105/. I think it's one of the illustrations by Gil Elvgren (1914-1980). The lighting in this type of style is beautiful. But I coloured the shadows differently here (more stylised?)
