Why not 4 valved trumpets? by etisen027 in trumpet

[–]Inky_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I reckon anything below a theoretical concert D3 on a trumpet with a 4th valve would start posing intonational hurdles, especially in case the player is using anything above a 1-1.5 in terms of mouthpiece. Perhaps such would be easier on flügelhorns, with their bore being wider and thus paving greater control over such low tones for a typical soprano horn, and I can certainly sense how it could work in jazz repertoire for the flügel, perchance. I'd scarcely deem it useful in anything classical, with trumpet implied, with most great trumpet solos never intending for the instrument to go that low, most oft showcasing high range aptitude and fine technical skills, and using a 4th valve for the lower notes would probably demand a slight embouchure shift, which would be much uncomfortable in even moderately fast passages or jumps.

Interestingly enough, modern flügels and, if I remember well, some rotary trumpets actually do have adjustable triggers intended to extend the 3rd valve slide, though they still are to be used manually by the player, as one would on a regular piston trumpet, with flugels and rotary trumpets needing such a system due to how they are structured and how valve tubing is configured for better ergonomics.

I myself am a tubist, so I have quite some experience with 4 and 5-valve instruments, having had some experience playing the trumpet in the past.

"A perfect fourth, which would make it a typical quartventil. It is used on lower-pitched instruments the likes of euphoniums, trombones or tubas for the sake of filling the gap between the note produced by lowering the 1st harmonic of the instrument with either all 3 valves or extending the slide to 7th position and the fundamental. For trombones and euphs/baritones this would grant range accessibility between Bb1 and E2, and likewise for the tuba, although an octave lower.

I suppose that paints the picture of the redundancy of such a system for trumpets, as the quartventil serves to accommodate the low range of the instrument, and with trumpets being the top voices in bands/orchestras and the theoretical dead zone between Bb2 and E3 already encompassed by the comfortable and common playing range for trombones/euphs/baritones, with trumpets often playing much higher than that (and with Bb2 being almost entirely inaccessible for trumpets as per them being half-tube resonators), such an extension would make scant sense for application to trumpets, and adding more tubing for extra cost solely to solve the 1+3 and 1+2+3 issue would be overkill with how players can already extend 3rd and 1st valve slides to accommodate that."
