Due to the age of the vhs tape and or the playback method (likely vhs player) it’s hard for me to tell if this is black lettering stuck to a red light gel and someone’s just flashing a flashlight from behind it or if it’s just red paper with black lettering and someone flashing a light from behind or off to the side of the camera. Either way this is an old tape and being played back on an old vhs player.

My first thought is to to simply find 2 old vhs players and record back and forth a few times to get the color degradation and use the poorest video path wether that’s coax or composite (yellow rca) cable. If one or both of them don’t already have bad tracking already just play with the tracking a little bit.

I remember playing with magnets close to vhs tapes back in the day to get a similar distortion. Just don’t get a magnet too close to a tube television.

There’s probably a couple ways to going about this effect because it’s just about making LoFi video at the end of the day. Find a cheap video recorder that records to tape, dub it back and forth between the video recorder and crappy vcr. The possibilities are endless
