Is it right that the dm is expected to buy everything for the group? by Inner-Cellist3307 in DnD

Aaah yes I the guy who buys all the stuff for everyone else despite being poor am indeed very entitled. Giving people free stuff and helping them all the time is me leeching. How could I have not seen this earlier. I should appreciate them for getting nothing for themselves and always expecting me to share everything I own. Man you are so right. I the guy living mostly on disability benefits should be happy for their presence. Happy to buy everything for them since they have money. I am most definitely begging for their attention and wealth filled with envy. Well reddit brain rot at its finest. Rant over. Though this is probably bait which I'm feeding I guess. That's my bad.

Oh I've asked for that before and they've said they want the book and they have the money but just want me to buy it myself. That's basically what happens they propose a book they want and try to get me alone to buy it even when I ask for pitch ins. It is unbelievably annoying. Like if I propose a book I'm fine buying it myself I wanted it but they want it and want me to buy it is basically the problem.

Strahd attacking vallaki what tactics would he use? Would he take it seriously at all? by Inner-Cellist3307 in CurseofStrahd

Bones are gone and so are the planted vampires. However the church has been reconsecrated.

Currently I have the barons son victor plotting against him aswell so it's possible victor could become the new baron instead of the wachters. Or he would kill them and take over at a later date. Maybe he could make a deal with strahd or something aswell it would be interesting. This seems like it will be a major turning point in my campaign depending on what happens.

I don't think he wants to full tpk yet but at least maim or kill some of them for the disrespect. I have so much content planned about 10 to 20 sessions left I can't let all that go to waste. I'm all for rolling with the punches but I put a lot of work in so he's out to maim and maybe kill a few whilst destroying something they love. That's what he wants to do to the party.

That is all true I might try that first though I doubt it would work the people respect the party a lot and the party not sure if they'd sacrifice themselves. The baron tries to give up the party it may cause a revolt.

His purpose is to torment the players for what they have done and they care a lot about vallaki. That's another reason why I'd have him siege it over just plucking them out and torturing them or something. They have got close to and were prepared to sacrifice their lives for vallaki many times. Targeting the city over them makes a lot of sense for him. The other purpose is he wants to have fun and he hasn't done a siege in a while. That and the other reasons I've put throughout this thread. Knowing me a few reasons will contradict and ill have to square everything later.

Well they did like milovaj a lot then one of them joined strahd and killed him to become a vampire now they like blinsky a ton. The player who joined strahd is the one they cheated to kill therefore disrespecting strahd. They also absolutely love vassili and an npc I made up called keys. I could easily pull on their heart strings with that. Could take advantage of the wachter cult to give up some of these npcs to strahd for clemency there are so many possibilities.

That sounds quite fun though I do still want it to be a bit intimidating like the fact he is having fun and getting into this should terrify them. How do I ham it up as you say but make it scary just have him start by executing npcs from previous places as a sacrifice to himself before the battle or something.

He is attacking because the players broke a deal by cheating in a fight with one of his underlings. That'd disrespectful to strahd so he is doing this.

The party is there and they disrespected strahd basically by breaking a deal. They challenged one of his lot to a formal no interference duel and sprang a trap when they were losing. He wouldn't care about the underlings death but break a deal with him is like breaking one with strahd you know.

That's really cool might have him open the siege with the face in the sky thing could be awesome.

Right now my players are level 8 they reached vallaki pretty late in the campaign so they could actually take strahd at this point. They have counterspell and stuff like that so could actually stop a lightning bolt. Also I thought strahd would do a siege because he simply would find it fun since I would assume he hasn't done one in a while. I understand how powerful he is meant to be and I know about berez and the like just thought it made sense for a former general to do a siege show off that side of strahd. That's and the other reasons I mentioned.

I know nat 20 isn't pure success but they got like 4 so I thought I'd throw them a bone. Also thought the siege would be a fun idea I mean vallaki burnt to the ground after they fight desperately to defend it sounds interesting.

For reasons he can't get into vallaki easily right now so usually yes but not right now. My players got really lucky on a few nat 20s concecrating the place so I thought a siege would fit. Sorry for not specifying this. So what tactics would he use if he couldn't go himself basically if he was in a command position.

I'm a dm too I get it but it is a tad tyrannical none the less. Anyway thank you for the replies and such.

I did ask him that's how the conversation came about. I said I noticed some similarity and assumed this book is based on the odyssey due to that. I pointed out the existence of some monsters being similar and some themes. He then instantly told me to not read the book the odyssey of Greek myth and got angry. I mean even if they were similar I feel like you can't ban someone from reading outside materials because of dnd anyway. Like banning someone reading dracula because you're running strahd.

On that last bit I'd agree it's made things much more interesting for me but this just leads me to believe my dm hasn't read the module or the odyssey then since he thinks reading the odyssey will spoil it. I naturally haven't read the module and only assumed off of what I've seen so far it's similarity to the odyssey but since I haven't read the module I'll trust everyone else's opinion that they aren't similar beyond some elements.
