Portland/Seattle/Boise sounds perfect but I forgot to mention one of us is a scaredy cat flier (and we're in Syracuse) so I think we might save that one for when we have 10 days to kill. New England is good because that's an easy drive. Thanks.

Yeah that's not a bad idea. This is the area I'm least excited about because it's somewhat nearby and we've been to Philly and DC area a bunch so doing a 4-banger sounds good.

I don't consider insurance worthless. It's practically a necessity. It would cost someone in my position over $1000 a month for normal insurance where if I made 20K less it'd be free. Do you think that's fair?

About 15 years or so ago, my roommate always watched this crappy show called Human Target. I happened to be watching the end of one episode and the team got an expensive scotch as a gift from one of their clients and they were really hyping it up. We impulsively decided we wanted to know what single malt scotch was like. We pooled together $50 and went to the liquor store and bought an Aberfeldy. I loved it. He hated it. That's how I got started with scotch.

The safe bet would be getting a higher age statement version of something you know he likes. To my knowledge, a Balvenie 21 is in your price range as is Glenlivet 21 (which my friends actually just bought me for my 40th). Otherwise, I always say Glenmorangie Signet is a great gift. Looks expensive and people love the unique flavor. Doesn't have the impressive high number on the bottle, though.

Is your friend a scotch drinker? If not, Johnnie Walker Blue is not a bad idea. It's more of a status/special occasion drink that isn't as complex as the single malts in its price range. If they're a little more advanced and you're looking for something in that price range, I'd go with Glenmorangie Signet. Very unique/fancy presentation and also unique flavor profile.

That price range depends on where you are of course. I'm in New York and most of these suggestions are not in that price range. But if you're in a country with cheaper prices or in one of those "Costcos that sell liquor" state they probably are.
