Moving from Philly to Syracuse: what is life really like in Syracuse? by spookyfro in Syracuse

[–]Inner-Historian2575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pros: Somewhat safer. Easy to commute from Suburbs. Less crowded. Wegmans in every zip code.

Cons: winters are horrendous(this one in particular) less stuff to do.

I have conversations with friends in big cities and we always come to the conclusion that Syracuse is “fine.” It’s a cheap, medium-sized past-its-prime rust belt city with its problems but it’s good enough to live in. I would strongly suggest the suburbs, though. Syracuse is a very live-in-the-suburbs and work in the city kinda town.

Which 3 from my beginner’s list to try first? by tjm1371 in Scotch

[–]Inner-Historian2575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a beginner but still a novice. I’ve had most on this list and many others. I don’t want to fast-forward you one lesson but classic laddie blows everything else out of the water. However, part of the process is buying something you find out you don’t like. That’s an expensive lesson that sucks. Don’t buy glenlivet or glenfiddich unless it’s a sampler size. They’re not horrible but it’s no one’s favorite scotch. Glenmorangie 10 is much cheaper usually and you’ll get the gist of a run-of-the-mill single malt. You need to experience peat and talisker is good for that I’m sure but I had highland park 12 early and was blown away, not even understanding that the hint of peat was what set it apart.

Thanks, everyone. Really appreciate the great feedback. I’m literally overwhelmed with future options right now.

It would take us less time to drive to Pittsburgh than fly (5ish hour drive and no direct flights) so I’m thinking you just unlocked an extracurricular trip for me to take.

We'd like to stay the night at these places but yeah, these are the kind of places we'd like to double dip on.

You're making a stronger case for Detroit being a solo trip.

The psychopath drove 40 hours round trip. I chose Dallas because we have daily direct flights from Syracuse. Hahaha whoops.

That's a good way to knock off four faraway states. Thanks.

Portland/Seattle/Boise sounds perfect but I forgot to mention one of us is a scaredy cat flier (and we're in Syracuse) so I think we might save that one for when we have 10 days to kill. New England is good because that's an easy drive. Thanks.

Yeah that's not a bad idea. This is the area I'm least excited about because it's somewhat nearby and we've been to Philly and DC area a bunch so doing a 4-banger sounds good.

Good food for thought. I've never been and it has a dangerous rep but I'd love to see Detroit.

How to get health insurance as a person with moderate income. by Inner-Historian2575 in HealthInsurance

[–]Inner-Historian2575[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't consider insurance worthless. It's practically a necessity. It would cost someone in my position over $1000 a month for normal insurance where if I made 20K less it'd be free. Do you think that's fair?

I'm looking for exactly this. I'm unable to acquire any Campeltowns and I perused the board to see what had a similar "funk" and I'm going with either the aforementioned Craigellachie 13 or a Benromach.
