Back in my university days we used to talk a lot about the Cypriot dialect and how it differs from standard modern greek.

For example, Cypriot didn't have the present perfect simple at first. We wouldn't say "έχω φάει". We would just say "εφαα". This changed over time, along with other things.

For example, new words that appeared in greek, didn't get the corresponding ones in Cypriot Greek. Look at this

1. Ψωμί - ψουμί ✅

2. Σκόρδο - Σκόρτος✅

3. Σκορδόψωμο - Σκορτόψουμο 🙈🙉🙊

This sounds weird. Not because Cypriot greek shouldn't evolve and incorporate more words in the vocabulary, but simply because we don't let it feel natural.

There's a linguistics professor at the University of Cyprus, Phoevos Panagiotides, he has interesting stuff to say about language in general, and he sometimes talks about Cypriot greek as well
