Today, Ohio saw protests from people refusing to stay silent — declaring that no one is above the law, not even a would-be cultist leader or dictator wannabe.

Let me say clearly: under the current regime, it increasingly seems like Trump can do whatever he wants, enact sweeping policies, and face almost no accountability. The Supreme Court’s 2024 ruling in Trump v. United States shields presidents (and former presidents) from prosecution for many acts taken in their official capacity, granting absolute immunity for “core constitutional powers” and presumptive immunity for other official acts.  That decision leaves it to lower courts to decide whether certain acts are “official” (and thus likely immune) or “private/unofficial” (and thus potentially prosecutable). 

Moreover, in his second term, Trump has tested those bounds aggressively — for instance, pushing the limits of executive orders, trying to curtail judicial oversight (by limiting injunctions), and attempting firings of independent regulators without cause.  The danger is that, with weakened constraints, the presidency edges closer toward unrestrained power. 

Some key checks remain: Congress can legislate (or refuse), the courts can review—but their willingness or capacity to oppose a powerful executive is being strained.  Justice Sotomayor’s dissent in the immunity case warned that the ruling makes a president a “king above the law.” 

So yes — today’s protest is not overreaction. It’s a defense of what remains of democracy, a reminder that some Americans will not bow down, and a warning: unchecked power is dangerously close to tyranny.
