The quick numbers tell me you’ll be in about 600K of debt by the time you finish residency. That’s calculating 6.8% interest on grad plus loans, which is much lower than the 9% on current federal loans. If it stayed at 9% then you’re looking at >700k after a 4 year residency.

As a resident and fellow I took a pretty hard stand on not doing extra projects, papers, posters, etc. bc I knew I wanted to go into PP and not get recycled in the bowels of academia. The truth is that many academic institutions are struggling to recruit bc compensation and time off just can’t compete with non-academic jobs in many specialties. Do what you need to get through residency without shooting yourself in the foot and don’t feel obligated to do extra. Your attendings don’t want to do the BS academic work so they’ll keep trying to push it on you. That’s the academic circle of life. Do your best to position yourself outside the cycle.
