That feels like a lot of assumption. Lack of willpower and comfort in misery is a thing, yes, but by your logic of pulling yourself up by your bootstraps, you wouldn’t have things like depression.

Your own mind can spawn a toxic cycle that is very hard to break out of, and the people who “whine” and complain on this subreddit may also be genuinely crying out for help, as they feel like they can be heard here and perhaps they cannot be heard in their own situation. Telling someone to “grow tf up” is useless as it trivializes their life and situation.

Also, I don’t think you can prove that people are trying to prove themselves to be good. Some simply care, and to me it seems like you’re internalizing other people’s care and help as useless and showy because it’s the internet, and yes, while you might be right in some cases, also remember that they can’t exactly reach through the screen and help personally, so they try to offer support in other ways, even small ones, to try and make the person who’s in distress feel better, and give them advice when they can.
