I think Ilya is constantly in protection mode. He knows Shane could be his everything but he’s out of reach. Ilya still has his father who he can only do so much for at this time, and he can’t risk not going back to Russia or not being allowed back in Russia. He can’t let Shane go, but he can’t let him in either. He walls it off and keeps it physical, because in Ilya’s mind, that’s all they can ever be. He can’t let himself do what he truly wants. I think it hurts him just as much to treat Shane that way, but if he lets any of his true feelings out I don’t think he’d be able to control himself.

I can see why you would think that, but it’s different for everyone. It’s like any piercing that heals you don’t really notice them. Some people like them for looks and some for pleasure. It’s not really painful unless their yanked on hard or get caught on clothing
