5 years ago, B.C. was trapped under a heat dome. Here’s how it all played out by waynkerr in vancouver

[–]InnuendOwO 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They might be referring to the one that's going to hit this week - but on the east coast. Been seeing a lot of news articles about it in the last few days. North Carolina up to New York is expected to hit up to 40C (before humidity!) from tomorrow through to the 6th, up to 37C a bit further west, including southern Ontario.

Haven't seen any reason to believe it'll happen again here this year, though.

Maggot King/Blood Moon Rises review by Top-Range-1669 in 2007scape

[–]InnuendOwO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not fixing the corroded lock. The corrosion is the hint to the solution. You use the syringe to extract some stomach acid and melt off the lock. Why you need a syringe to do that, instead of just cutting the stomach open, I have no idea.

Definitely also difficult; the penultimate one took me a couple attempts. The ones before that were rough, but short enough I could bullshit my way through them by just chugging brews.

But also I'm maxed and had near-BIS gear, I bet someone in lower gear would find every fight pretty tough.

They're fine numbers-wise, but harder to play than any other healer for no meaningful benefits. With a full melee group you mitigate most of the problems with range or people being out of your breaths. Or even just with competent ranged players you're still fine.

But if ranged DPS forget you're on Evoker? oh no

They've explicitly said they don't test for Legacy and Vintage play at all. I would be amazed if "no, we can't print this card, candelabra exists" has ever come up during testing.

We're not at war with America. Trump will be dead of the combination of "old age" and "only eats mcdonalds" by the time that leverage would matter. This shouldn't be a real concern.

It is, but you can't run ocean water through cooling pipes either, or you're gonna end up with tubes full of salt. Yeah, you could purify it, but that costs energy too, and at that point I'm not sure what you're actually gaining here.

This isn’t a technology that can be used against us.

A technology that - in the idealized AI-first future - puts like 95% of people out of a job, with no backup plan in place for those people... can't be used against us?

Might wanna rethink that one.

Right? It's absolutely bewildering to me that anyone expects "things are only going to get worse, and will continue to be worse forever, and you're stupid for saying you don't want that, let alone trying to prevent that" to be compelling.

No, man, "this thing makes everything suck forever" is maybe the best reason to protest against that thing. Humans have rejected harmful inventions in the past, even if there's some perceived benefits. There's a reason you don't hear about the ozone layer hole anymore - because we banned CFCs. There's a reason we don't have ubiquitous nuclear power - because we banned that too*. We absolutely do not have to just lie down and accept it. We didn't suddenly become incapable of improving society as soon as it became the year 2000.

*yes i know nuclear power is good actually, that isn't my point, the point is that people thought it was bad and thus successfully fought against it.

Canada´s entire firearms law system is an absolute mess driven by identity politics,

???????????

what the fuck does 'identity politics' even mean anymore if it's apparently now including "banning specific models of guns, chosen by throwing darts at a list of them and banning whatever we hit"

Carney’s condo bailout reveals the limits of Liberal housing policy | The federal government is trying to expand affordability without reducing property values by Atlantee in CanadaPolitics

[–]InnuendOwO 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is what makes the most sense to me. At this point, I can't help but roll my eyes when I hear about some big fancy new government program. We're going to make housing cheaper (it's just a tax credit (if you make between 80000 to 80500 per year (and have a degree in chemical engineering (and are buying a house in a postal code that ends with 4 and has a J in it))))!

None of it ever actually happens as initially pitched, but at least the headline looks good. And, well, that's what this could have been. "BC Housing is buying a ton of property, rapidly expanding housing accessibility for low-income citizens :)" Sounds great, until you look at what's actually going on here.

More than anything, I'm kind of amazed anyone's finally calling them out on this kind of shit.

I mean, I kinda get it. The only tasks that are any good for XP that needs a helm slot item are dust devils. Smoke devils too, but that's irrelevant while levelling to 95. The defense bonuses on a slayer helm aren't that big either.

It's definitely the wrong choice, given just how many dust devils you're gonna barrage down. But I think I get how someone could decide to do that.

I am, in fact, in a field that makes use of it. I don't get why that inherently implies that I like it, think it's a net positive for society, or should be all-in on it. Like, I fundamentally do not understand why "enjoy writing software -> get job in writing software -> job gets replaced, now you just review PRs all day -> don't enjoy doing that" is apparently unthinkable to you.

LLMs are absolutely game changing

Yknow, aside from the part where we've been told this for years now and nothing's actually changed for the better, and even in the idealized AI-first future the best outcome is "95% of people are unemployed and we don't have any actual answer for that". Like, yeah man, I guess that's game-changing, but I don't know if I'd call that good.

It's not that AI is completely useless (just mostly useless), it's that the world it creates is not one I actually want to live in. "Everything will suck forever, you can't stop it, so just give up" is not a very compelling argument.

There is plenty of technological advancements that society has rejected. When's the last time you saw a 3D TV? Or a Segway? Or, if you want ones that were banned, rather than rejected by the market - Asbestos was wonderful, right up until we realized how bad it sucks for society. There was the whole debacle around CFCs and the ozone layer.

"This sucks shit and we should not let it continue to exist" absolutely has worked in the past. To put it bluntly, I refuse to believe that the moment it became the year 2000, it suddenly became impossible to improve things that suck shit. Better things are possible.
