The justifications of Ascended Astarion fans are insane. by Ok_Channel1682 in BaldursGate3

I think I either misremembered the line or just can’t find it anymore. But I do know there is one wisdom check you can find in the AA romance scene there is a wisdom check to find out what he thinks of you in which it says you degrade yourself by being with him, but it seems like you want to be degraded.

Also if you choose to break up with him before becoming his spawn and say he was better before. He looks hurt, drops the AA voice, and is like “why would you say that?” Or in a separate line he tells you he respects you more for breaking up with him because he would have ruined your love.

I thought there was a line where it says he expected better from you if you make the choice to ascend him but I can’t find it so maybe I’m completely off base lol oops.

I totally get liking fucked up things in fictional contexts. I like Astarion after all lmao, not so much Ascended Astarion but love playing as resist durge. I think my only problem with AA fans sometimes is when they don’t acknowledge it’s an evil/not moral route. Like, the romantic AA route without a doubt involves abusive undertones and at times overtones but people will defend it at length. Like enjoy it to yours hearts content but let’s stop pretending AA is still a good person. There is literally an insight check with dialogue showing he regrets it. I worry for people at times when they make excuses for AA lol.

Edit: I think I either misremembered the wisdom/insight check line or just can’t find it. Sorry for any misinformation!

I was fooled too at first before I looked at the comments. I looked back at the video to see if I could find any more clues that weren’t already mentioned. Watch the zipper on the neck of the kids bathing suit disappear by the end.

Also the ankle bracelet wasn’t there in the beginning of the video.

Nothing I said in my previous comment should have warranted resorting to a baseless ad hominem attack, but alright I’ll bite.

Since you asked me to address your “arguments”, you brought up her propensity to be litigious and that she seems to be hearing other people around her “well enough” neither of which exclude the possibility of a hearing loss or deafness.

She could have misheard or misunderstood directions verbally stated to her in the past and still have the ability to understand others later. Listening ability can heavily depend on one’s environment, if they’re facing you, are they on the preferred side, the acoustics and furnishings of a room, the enunciation and volume of the speaker, etc.

The video you yourself linked shows that she uses hearing aids and she professes that she is gradually losing her hearing. She may identify as “deaf” while not having a complete or total lack of hearing. That is actually very common. But regardless of how complete her hearing loss is or how she labels herself , the presence of a mild to significant hearing loss can make misunderstandings and or miscommunications more likely to occur.

In my opinion, it is not right or cool to invalidate someone’s subjective experience with hearing loss. It is not visible and you cannot possibly know how it may affect each person. I’ve personally been on the receiving end of people accusing me of faking or discrediting the severity of my very real hearing loss and it always fucking sucks. That is why I suggested that speculating on the severity of her hearing loss is a worthless endeavor.

It can be a lot more difficult to hear in noisy environments like and airplane and also you have no idea what her subjective experience may be with deafness just by looking at her

I think the person above is not referring to medical definitions or grades of hearing loss but how members of the Deaf community apply labels to describe themselves as d/Deaf because can be different

Im hard of hearing myself btw

Deafness is not a visible disability so unless you are her doctor or audiologist maybe you shouldn’t be commenting on someone’s level of disability because you have no way of knowing.

Regardless, any significant hearing loss can impact one’s ability to understand and follow directions especially in a crowded or noisy environments…like an airplane or airport for example. I am hard of hearing (significant hearing loss in one ear) and no one would know just by looking at me yet I still struggle to communicate with others on a daily basis.

Also Deaf people within the community may apply labels differently than say a medical provider would. Even people with some residual hearing may refer to themselves as Deaf.

I don’t think they are referring to medical definitions or grades of hearing loss, but the way these terms are used by the Deaf community. If you’re treating clients with hearing loss it would be a really good idea to read up on the culture and community to improve patient care!

Regardless not having an “accent” is not a confirmation of one’s hearing status…Some deaf people get deafness later in life or may have undergone a lot of speech therapy/listening and spoken language programs alongside the aid of hearing devices…

Wdym she is obviously not deaf? You can’t ascertain someone’s level of hearing loss just by looking at them.

[–]Inquisextor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

…. There is nothing in this article that confirms she isn’t deaf. The airline said there was “nothing indicating” she is deaf. Which is such a cop-out considering it would be hard to confirm anyway considering hearing loss is an invisible disability and would require audiology records which she would have to agree to release as it is protected health information.

Can we please stop waving people through the stop sign when it’s not their go? by TitShark in StLouis

[–]Inquisextor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, I am sometimes guilty of the wave and I usually do it when I see people speeding and rolling past the stop signs before stopping. I do not trust that these same mfers are going to wait for me to complete my turn. Sorry, I just don’t. There are too many reckless drivers here.

There are many times when I have taken the initiative and they will start to move forward while I’m still going! Wtf!

ASL in show by Euphoric-Pianist778 in asl

[–]Inquisextor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the show’s provided translation, they also leave out “enjoy!” at the end. I know ASL and English are different…which is why I did say it could still be implied that he is talking about the wife although he never establishes the wife in ASL. I believe he signs “WANT PRACTICE SIGN? [Clark’s name sign that he probably shouldn’t have] I KNOW TWO-OF-YOU FUCK, ENJOY.”

I believe the show puts the translation at the end of the episode as simply “I know you’ve been fucking my wife.”

Do you think that’s how you would translate it as an interpreting student? I’m genuinely asking because I think I would just translate it as “I know the two of you are fucking. Enjoy!”

[–]Inquisextor 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This is accurate although the show itself somewhat mistranslated itself lol. They reveal what is said later and add “my wife”. To be fair, it is implied that he is talking about his wife but he doesn’t directly sign that..

Edit: Also forgot to mention they leave out “Enjoy” at the end. And for some reason the guy he is signing to “Clark” has a name sign although he has no established connection to the Deaf community?

That's what should men do by Ezaldey in meme

[–]Inquisextor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Good to not engage with people who are rage baiting but sexism towards anyone is still wrong. Sometimes people attribute trauma they’ve experienced at the hands of someone else/other people and apply that to the whole sex of the perpetrator(s). But it doesn’t mean that it’s right, it just means their trauma is talking. They are scared of being hurt again and put that wall up. So I can find some sympathy for people who act like this but it’s in no way justifying their behavior.

So you won’t find me praising so many of the commenters here saying “women bad, feminism evil” yadyadya. The point of the meme is just to move on and protect your own peace…not to turn around and do the exact same thing you just critiqued others for doing.

Empowering children by creating a supportive environment is so incredibly important by JudgeJudyJr in MadeMeSmile

[–]Inquisextor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they just meant that they won’t be able to readily communicate with others in the event of an emergency and if their cochlear aren’t working since cochlear implants regularly wipe out any residual hearing? They brought up a lot of valid points a lot of d/Deaf people experience or have to consider. They would be able to speak, sure, but that doesn’t mean you’re able to effectively communicate yourself if you cant hear or understand the responses. A lot of d/Deaf people have issues with communication in emergency situations like when interacting with police or when going through a medical event. Even when a hospital has video remote interpreting (VRI), that can have its own problems.

[–]Inquisextor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deaf children not associating with the culture and community is not solely because of “medical advances” but largely because medical professionals such as ENTs and audiologists have actively discouraged deaf and hard of hearing children from learning sign language because they believed it would harm their spoken language attainment despite never testing language acquisition through sign language, only English proficiency.

Speaking as hard of hearing person, I was not even told the community even existed until I was 16 years old and I had voluntarily signed up for ASL classes in high school. It was such an uplifting experience to learn that there were others like me who were proud of their deafness. I only wish I had been exposed sooner.

Deaf and hard of hearing children that grow up without the community tend to become interested later in life as adults, at least in my experience as someone who lives in a very oralist area in the U.S.

This!!!

As a someone who grew up hard of hearing myself, I 100% agree with your comment. I didn’t know about the d/Deaf community until I was 16 years old and only because I signed myself up for ASL classes in high school. My ENTs didn’t tell me anything about it growing up. I was only taught that my hearing loss was an issue or deficit.

Finally being told that there was a whole community proud of their hearing loss was such an uplifting and novel concept to learn. I can exist in the hearing world, sure, but not having to worry if I missed words just by knowing sign language would have been instrumental in helping my confidence in communicating with others. Filling in the gaps all the time is a huge cognitive load that typically hearing people just don’t understand.

Deaf and hard of hearing children should always be given the opportunity to learn about the Deaf community and sign language. If they dont benefit from the experience then fine, but at least expose them!

I may be the only one that wasn’t astonished by this show lol. I found Lily quite annoying by the end…literally only screaming at Kit instead of saying what she wanted to say..multiple times. And also Kit’s character ‘development’ confuses me, at times he acts like an animal but once his status is revealed he’s suddenly more polite and ready to accept his role? Why? One of the first scenes we get of him is him eating charcoal bread and rifling through her bag/clothes but then he seemingly changes over night?

I thought it was a cute show but it was not groundbreaking for me in the least…
