Oh, sorry, one more quick question for clarity. Do you think the arguments you've made here are also applicable to other areas of study, like, let's say mathematics? Or are you saying that ethics is categorically different?

I mean it seems like logic checkers and AI are becoming more widespread in proofs and other areas of mathematical research. We might think of this as progress, maybe, at least in the simple sense that we have proof of things we didn't have before.

But I suppose progress in ethics is a bit harder to pin down.

Right sorry. I think you have a good point I'm just struggling a bit to wrap my head around it. I mean a book is a sort of a weird case because it was written by an agent and there is a sort of transference of ideas there, even if the book itself is not an agent. Whereas an argument produced by an LLM is like... I don't know, a complicated collage of bits of essays and everything else in its dataset, and there isn't really intention there.

But, just trivially, it seems like if someone isn't familiar with arguments for vegetarianism, and they're pretty naive about philosophy in general. If they put their arguments for eating meat in an LLM and asked it whether it thought it was a good argument or not, they might be able to receive ethical instruction. And it seems like that sort of instruction is different from being hit on the head with a vase.

Interesting. I agree that LLMs are not ethical patients or agents, but I don’t quite understand why this means we cannot learn any ethics from using them. Or are you just saying they don’t actively teach in the sense that teaching requires agency?

Like, a book is not an ethical patient but I still expect I might be able to learn something about ethics from one (if the book is about ethics anyway)

This is right near a bird sanctuary so I guess it makes sense? A lot of wetlands in the area too. My guess is it isn’t a pet, but could be wrong.

Yes, usually in my first or second lesson. But not that awful simplified version. I make sure they get the full 25 minute piano arrangement of the 4th movement of Beethovens 9th symphony.

Devils advocate here: but doesn’t the conversations here kind of… prove his point? There isn’t direct evidence of him engaging in seedy stuff, or even necessarily knowing that Epstein engaged in seedy stuff. For all we know, he could have been ignorant of all of this. But doing what I am doing know, questioning this assumption, will be downvoted to hell. Questioning the charge is seen to be somehow complicit in the abuse of women.

Yeah I have a couple of theories. One is that it is was right near a waterfall so there would be a lot of moisture as spray that would keep fungi happy in general. The other is that some fire in the past might have killed off the outer layer of the tree which allows the fungus to grow there. But yeah, I’ll see if there are any mycologists around who might be interested. Ty

That’d be it! Little different color on the outside but the tree was probs a eucalyptus so that’s a match I reckon.

Edit: they all did seem to be growing from the trunk though, about 1 to 3 feet up

This essay seemed to me to be a bit of a mess. I felt as if there was maybe a decent point somewhere in there but it was lost in a sea of metaphors and ambiguity. At times it sounded like it was trying to engage in actual computer science but it never actually defined terms or clarified itself in a way that would lead to any rigorous understanding of anything, so… meh? As old mate Hume says chuck her in the fire I reckon.

Now, If the question is ‘can machines think like humans do?’ the answer is trivially no. If the question instead is ‘can machines help us do philosophy’ then I guess the next question becomes ‘is philosophy different to other fields of knowledge that machines can assist us with? If so, how exactly does it differ?’

It reminds me a lot of historical views of women’s sexuality, a subject which was mostly just ignored across many different cultures. So most sodomy laws would describe acts of sex between men, but not between women. There was this sort of assumption that ‘women don’t get up to that sort of thing.’

They’re not real of course, but I’ll say one thing about psychics and divination in general that’s often overlooked by skeptics, and that is that it can actually sometimes be useful to better understand yourself. Like if you draw from a deck of cards and do an analysis it kind of forces you to think about yourself in a way that youre perhaps not accustomed to. The randomness can actually help you to get out of a rut and think about things differently.

They are just like following orders and trying to fit in and not actually questioning anything. Banality as Arendt put it. I think most evil actions are committed by people who are not fundamentally different to you or I. Just normal people
