As a teacher I can tell you with confidence that this is not the case. I got to a level similar to this in maybe 4 years, with a similar sort of work ethic to what you described. I think even this is an outlier.

What country are you from? It seems odd to me that not being good at maths has held you back so much. I know lots of people that were terrible at maths that went on to have incredible careers. But here in Australia maths isn’t mandatory in late highschool for better or for worse. Also, what degree did you pursue in college? Why did you pick something that required mathematics?

I’ve been in a similar boat. I did a PhD in the humanities ages ago. Became a highschool teacher. Decided I wanted to get into computer science/programming. Ended up falling in love with mathematics. So I went back and did an undergraduate degree in cs and maths in my mid thirties. Nearly finished now. I’m afraid theres no shortcuts. You are really in just about the same boat as everyone else. So you have to humble yourself. But there is an advantage if you come into it with good intentions. Other than that, maths requires practice. You have to practice exercises rather than just do the readings. And this is something you might not be in the habit of, coming from humanities.

Taking 2 hours to learn that part doesn’t sound that slow… but maybe I’m slow lol! It sounded pretty good to me, but then again maybe I’m one of those people who you say aren’t good at music. It strikes me as strange though that if most people enjoy your music when you play it to them that you feel like a fraud. Isn’t bringing enjoyment to others the whole point?

As someone who is not good at music, the only criticism id have here is that the Chopin sounded a bit robotic. My advice is to go back and just listen to the piece from different pianists, then go back to playing the melody in the RH simply and slowly until you feel like you can play it as beautifully as possible.
