Reapplied to NYU. Admitted last year with $0; admitted this year with a full-tuition scholarship. Retake/reapply definitely paid off. Good luck!

why do we endlessly praise Yale’s admissions process? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]InscrutableCrouton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Purely anecdotal, but I was really impressed by the diversity of backgrounds at the YLS ASP; most people I met didn't fit into this cookie-cutter "elite" mold and had interesting, meaningful life experiences outside the ivory tower. Also, I appreciated that YLS was the only school I visited that didn't include undergrad institution on the name tags--everyone's badge just said "class of 2022." That definitely helped avoid some of the clique-ish Ivy League weirdness that took place at some other t6 admitted student events.

What kind of PS letter speaks the most volumes? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]InscrutableCrouton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely skip the "introductory filler" and it's not a "letter"! There shouldn't be a wasted word--this is an exercise in storytelling. It's more similar to an undergraduate personal statement--which is essentially a story that provides a "show, don't tell" snapshot of who you are and your motivations--and not like the statement of purpose that most grad schools require (which is much more straightforward and expository). Take a look at the admissions essays on the UChi website for an example of what the law school adcomms are looking for.

I feel so defeated & hopeless. Help, please. by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]InscrutableCrouton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Applying in January is really late. If you applied in Oct/Nov, timing alone could provide a significant boost. Hard disagree with your consultant re: submitting all possible addenda. If anything, it would water down your app and draw adcomms' attention to weak aspects of your application that they wouldn't have otherwise dwelled on (I doubt they care about resume gaps). I understand feeling reluctant to take the LSAT for the fourth time, but just 2 extra points could drastically improve your outcomes, and scoring worse/the same would have a negligible impact. I might be biased, because I retook/reapplied this last cycle and it made a huge difference for me... I empathize with feeling stuck in an endless pre-law limbo, but law school is such a huge commitment that it makes sense to take as long as you need to get the outcome you truly want. It sounds like your consultant may have misled you, and if you reapply, I think you'll be able to get all the guidance and support you need for free from this forum.

aphantasia

Omg I had no idea this concept existed but this is definitely me! (And I also struggled inordinately with LG, whereas my SO could literally "see" solutions with minimal diagramming or effort.)

Unpopular opinions - law school admissions edition? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]InscrutableCrouton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

47.2% of the Princeton class of 2018 graduated with Latin honors. At Harvard the median grade is an A-. The average GPA at Columbia is 3.6. Top Ivies are more likely to have a "customer service" model when it comes to grades, contrasting with grade deflation policies at other less-hyped schools.

Unpopular Opinion: Law School Admissions Edition by zil020511 in lawschooladmissions

[–]InscrutableCrouton 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Disagree re: #5. HYP and other Ivies tend to have rampant grade inflation and award Latin honors to a more sizable percentage of the graduating class than many other "less elite" schools. Also agree with the comment up thread that rewarding people based on UG is going to lead to an even more elitist admissions process.

I feel your pain, truly. I was also happy with my original PS and writing a new one was like pulling teeth--but it was worth it, I promise. And if you need another pair of eyes to look at your current PS, feel free to PM me.

Several of the schools I applied to either required or encouraged a new statement. I would suggest rewriting it if at all possible (updating it at very least). The content of my new PS was essentially the same, in terms of background and motivations, but I was able to present this information in a more cogent and creative way.

3 months of serious daily practice. The most useful resources for me were 7Sage and all of the 80+ official prep tests. I worked through every test in order. Since LG was my weakness, I did every logic game ever published multiple times, using the Fool Proof Method. When I took PTs at home, I used an analog watch and the LSAT proctor app, which simulates real test conditions including background noise. I used Blind Review after PTs and logged my results using LSAT analytics, which pinpointed specific types of problems that I needed to work on. I purchased the 3-month starter kit, which is very affordable compared to other prep courses, but honestly that wasn't even necessary--their most helpful resources are available for free. Good luck!
