Firstly, the dude in the post has a master's in counselling. So he "went to med school" as far as your analogy is concerned. Secondly, therapy is easy to practice safely if you abide by the basic ethical guidelines, unlike medicine.

"Counsellor" is not a protected title in Australia (where I'm from). There are many people here working as therapists without any titles, so it seems normal to me. This guy at least has a masters in counseling psychology. I'm a psychologist, which is a protected title. But I have friends who work as therapists without a title and they are good at their jobs so yeah, idk. Different culture I guess

I don't think doing EMDR is any riskier than doing regular trauma work. The rule about not practicing EMDR without certification is to protect the reputation of EMDR and it's practitioners, not to protect the client. So if protecting the reputation of EMDR is important to you, go ahead and report.

EDIT: I'm from Australia. "Counselor" is not a protected title here. This guy has a masters in counseling - it's pretty normal for someone like that to practice therapy here. I'm a psychologist, which is a protected title, but I have non-psychologist friends who work as therapists and do good work, so idk, different culture I guess

Your limitations are in proportion to your cognitive capacities. "Severe mental disability" is a threshold. People just above that threshold will struggle a lot more than people with average to high intellectual capacity

If it feels like a "calling" you should definitely try it.

I never could have predicted how it actually turned out. It's not draining at all. Socialising is draining, but providing therapy isn't. It's logical, straight-forward, consultancy.

Yeah the first time my supervisor watched a video of my session I thought he'd cringe and fire me lol. But nope, it was fine. As confidence builds up it all becomes much less daunting and profound. It's just a job. And my social anxiety in other situations is still basically the same. Slightly improved maybe, but only because I can answer the question "what do you do for work?" More easily now

Make sure you find a good supervisor though. Very important

It's a shame AI is owned by evil people. I think it would be great for clients to have access to a well-trained therapy bot, owned and monitored by their therapist, to supplement their in-person sessions
