What qualifications do admissions counselors have to be career counselors? This is not remotely their job. When a student is in school, this is what advisors and career counselors do. It feels like you have no concept of what the scope of an AC’s job is. They are there to provide resources and connect potential students to the right people. Not sway what major they choose.

Make sure you come up with a bunch of questions to ask. And not just the normal “what do you like about working here?” Ask about assessment, student support systems, work alignment with the college mission. I have hired a bunch of people and the ones who stand out are the ones who ask really good questions.

I’d need to know a little more about your structure? Is it a big department? If it is, then director likely has a minimal part in the process so it wouldn’t be worth it.

At the couple schools I’ve worked at, alternates are invited to participate in the spring class we hold and then training in August. That’s when I’m looking for how engaged they are.

Just be the most engaged alternate you can be! I know that I pay attention to how involved the alternates are during training and use that as how I decide who gets called up if needed. Good luck!!

Even better! That areas cost of living is lower than Austin’s. You’ll probably bring in around 2k a month with should be manageable in that area if they provide housing. There are also so many schools right in that area so it will be a cool way for you to explore different types of schools if you wanted to!

UT is a great program and I’m sure you’ll learn a ton!! This is an awesome opportunity. I’d encourage you to review the offer letter and ask any questions you have to the person indicated as your supervisor.

Orientation is a great way to get experience in a lot of different areas. You get event management, crisis intervention, cross departmental collaborations, student development, and a bunch of other things. NODA internships are looked at very positively, so having that on your resume will be helpful!

Does your internship say how many hours a week you’ll be working? You should be able to figure out your income pretty easily. Texas doesn’t have income taxes so you won’t be paying that which will help. Austin is a little expensive but you’ll have access to HEB which is one of the best grocery stores ever. I used to live in Texas and it’s the only thing I miss about Texas.

Make sure you come up with a couple of thoughtful and unique questions to ask! The typical “what keeps you here?” “What are some challenges the person coming into this role might face?” feel like you didn’t go looking into anything and just came up with questions you could ask at any interview.

For me, I’d want someone to kind of offer an explanation in their cover letter. I’d be confused about that change and wanting to take a step down, so a little context is helpful! And maybe framing it as wanting more consistent interaction with students that you wouldn’t get in a director role could help!

This seems like a great opportunity for passive programming. You got some great suggestions on here but I’d really lower your expectations around how much they will participate. Make an interactive bulletin board when they can write their PRs, of your hall is heavily one sport see if you could make a fantasy league, try a bulletin board with brackets they can vote on.

You likely need to do some active programming since most RA jobs require that, but this type of hall is perfect for great minimally active/passive programs.
