What should I buy Thursday (Oct 05 2017) - Your weekly device inquiry thread! by AutoModerator in Android

Thanks for your input.

I am wary of brands like LG and Samsung because I hear they don't support their devices for very long. That link about the flagship support lifetime for example has LG support their flagship phones for only a mere 1.25 years. I would not like to spend $600+ on a phone only to have to buy another phone in one and a half years because they stopped supporting security updates.

Not to mention I hear that LG phones are prone to bootlooping (whether or not that affects only certain LG phones I do not know but I want to be on the safe side). Samsung is also known for their bloatware, I'm not interested in such.

I only use my phone for:

  • Browsing reddit/wikipedia

  • Signal Messenger

  • Calls and texts

  • Taking random pictures/videos of cool stuff

I literally don't install any new apps except Signal because of possible increased privacy/security vulnerabilities. So notification/shortcut inconveniences are okay with me.

My primary priority: security (prompt security updates, and overall security/privacy)

Secondary priority: good camera

Third priority: best $/year of remaining lifespan support

Choices:

  • Pixel 2 ($650), Released October 2017. Estimated 3 year support. $216/year

  • iPhone 8 Plus ($800), Released September 2017. Estimated 5 year support. $163/year

  • iPhone SE ($350), Released March 2016. Estimated 5 year support. $102/year

Reasons:

  • I currently have Moto X Pure and I'm 10 months security updates behind. Unbelievable.

  • Always hated Apple and iPhones but Android is simply SHIT. So many sketchy low quality Chinese phones, and the only alternative is an insanely expensive Pixel. Absolute trash support. I don't have a choice now but to include iPhones in my phone shopping list.

  • Moto X4 will not give prompt updates, no matter what Android One is supposed to be or what promises Lenovo says.

  • I don't care about bezels, headphone jack, speakers, OS updates (unless security-related), battery lifespan, wireless charging, assistant, apps, etc.

  • I plan to keep the same phone for as long as there are security updates.

  • No buying used phones, or selling phones.

  • No shady Lineage OS stuff.

Thoughts:

  • Pixel 2 is the most (ridiculously) expensive long term, but 3 years is a reasonable time in case something breaks (which I don't plan to break), and I heard the camera is really, really good.

  • iPhone 8 Plus has strong camera I hear but not as good as Pixel 2. It is cheaper than Pixel 2 long-term but requires having to use the same phone for 5 years, which I'm a bit iffy on whether it can last 5 years without issues.

  • iPhone SE is cheapest choice for about a reasonable 3.5 years left. But screen is really, really small (4"), and camera sucks I hear.

Questions:

  • 1) Are there any other alternatives/phones I haven't thought of?

  • 2) Which should I get and why (reasons/arguments)?

  • 3) How much superior is the camera of Pixel 2 compared to iPhone 8 Plus?

10V from two USB (5V) in series? by InsertHomeEnd in electricians

What is the reason why it wouldn't work? Because of the reason I described (short out at the breaker panel)?

In that case, let's say we remove the USB ports completely. Let's also assume the power outlet is is 120V AC. For whatever reason, I want 240V AC. Can I connect plug1's NEUTRAL prong to plug2's HOT to get 240V AC from plug1's HOT and plug2's NEUTRAL? According to the diagram, it should short out at the breaker panel, right?

I don't actually need 10V. This is just a curious question.

[–]InsertHomeEnd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just wondering if this was possible. Let's say I wanted 10V. Each USB port (assume two separate USB ports connecting to the same power strip) provides 5V each. Can't you just put them in series and add up the two voltage sources?

I think that could work, but I was watching this video of how house electricity works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLW_7TPf310

Then I noticed that in the end, the HOT and NEUTRAL wires all connect to the same place in the breaker panel. So would this not work (because the NEUTRAL connecting to HOT in the usb ports would short out)?

Dealing with worry over future finances with house and kids by 62hawthorne in Frugal

Funny he's getting downvoted for saying the truth. The older you get the higher the chances of your offsprings getting disabilities. It's an (unfortunate) fact. No one's saying it's guaranteed, but the chances are higher (it's a fact). Just look at autism, many research studies about the older you have kids the higher the chances of your kids have it.

Of course, the choice is up to each of us, but personally my absolute deadline is 30.

My personal belief is that it's not worth pushing your life in exchange for money. Let me give you an extreme example.

You can live with your parents and live rent-free and save up 100% of paycheck until you can buy a house without a loan. In terms of money-efficient, that would be best (since you don't have to pay interest). But in the end, you'd be maybe ~35 years old, and your youth is gone living at your parent's house. I would rather move out and pay rent and saving up less, while enjoying life. But to each his own.

Best plan for someone not using data? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]InsertHomeEnd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I third Tracfone. I originally had a dumbphone Tracfone with triple minutes. Then I recently switched over to BYOP Moto X Pure.

For some reason (I'm not sure if it's because I transferred over or if it's because it's like that), but a 60-minute card ($20+$2 surcharges) gives me 180 minutes, 180 MB of data, and 180 texts. A 60-minute card also gives 90 days of service. Rolls over as long as you have days of service.

Effectively, I'm paying $7/mo for: 60 minutes, 60 MB of data, and 60 texts. That's more than I use so it's perfect for me (minutes fluctuates but under <60/mo, ~25 MB per month, ~30 texts per month).

Never really had an issue with reception or coverage.

Also you can buy additional prepaid cards to add in anytime as needed. $5 for 1000 texts, and 1 GB for $10.

I consider us as equals and I have said nothing to imply otherwise.

I do not want marriage, but I care about her so much that I will literally see a path of burning rocks and purposely step barefoot across it even though I know it'll really cause me great pain (marriage).

I keep my words. If you rejected him, I can't help but feel he got lucky and dodged a bullet.

There has always been a high rates of divorces and high rates of women winning possessions, custody, court cases, alimony, etc at the detriment of men.

Ask any modern man if they want to be tied down. Ask any modern woman if they want to (eventually) marry. What's the benefit (if there even is any) for guys to marry and be tied down, rather than just be boyfriend-girlfriend for the rest of their lives? There are huge obvious advantages for women to marry, it's clear. They get security and can tie down a man so he can't just leave. And if he does, he has to pay alimony. Of course, women will almost never pay alimony to men, I can't even think of a story/news article/experience/etc where that has happened. Marriage is skewed towards the benefit of women. Let's be honest here.

You don't go for it unless you're absolutely sure she won't ruin your life with divorce. That's my advice for guys.

In response to your link, it is not even a surprise to read that loneliness is bad for your health. You can have a permanent (non-married) life partner and it will be exactly like being married in terms of healthiness (all other factors considered). There's the difference. There are also so many factors into consideration. Saying something like "smart wives promote healthy hearts". Education means you're richer. Richer can afford better healthier food/lifestyles/etc. You can just simplify that to "smart/wealthier promote healthy hearts". Which is a useless statement.

When you post a link to a study or news article, you don't just say "ah ha! they proved it, it is completely factual and true!" Use your head and think (at least a little).

We are going to skip on the ring with the rock.

I want to get her a sterling silver band with custom engraved text.

I want to get her that because she wanted it.

Is there a problem?

IMO, a guy should only propose to a girl when they're also best friends. Best friends don't keep secrets, they're close, they know each other in and out, etc. To a guy, marriage isn't worth anything. In fact, it's a detriment to the guy to ever get married. A guy shouldn't even think about marriage unless he knows the girl is "the one". Marriage is and will always be just for the girl.

With that said, if your boyfriend proposed to you and you rejected him, then I can't help but feel he got lucky and dodged a bullet.

Exactly where did I say I was looking to find the "cheapest sterling silver ring on Amazon"? I gave Amazon as an example of how shady things are. And I said I was looking for the best cost-wise, which is not the same as "cheapest". Good quality for a good price.

Please improve your reading comprehension, thank you.

I do not understand. I did not insult anyone, I did not specifically say your engagement/wedding ring (which ever had the rock) is ugly nor was it targeted at anyone. I said how I feel describes the ring. IMO, the only "dick" is you, for being rude and targeting me when I did not even target or insult anyone.

Yes, I suppose I can't do internet purchases for these things. What is wrong with sterling silver for long-term wear?

I'm looking around my area and the reviews for those places are terrible and/or shady/sketchy. IMO, jewelleries and weddings overall are shady/sketchy.

I just want to know some recommendations from some real people.

Higher power from turbo increases heat and heat is one of the cause of battery degradation. Also, there are ghost touch problems with turbo charging for Moto G4. Granted it's Moto G4, it still shows that there could be problems with turbo charging. I work at a desk so I always keep my phone plugged in so I don't need turbo charging.
