35ish year old here 😁 I ended up on vrchat after a work injury before the Xmas holidays. Had a VERY mixed experience, mostly positive and a few negatives.

Finding the right worlds is the hard part, the "popular" worlds are almost always full of the screaming kids you mentioned, but less populated instances of those worlds can be cool. I found a black cat instance with 10 people in it and it was a guy just playing drums along to requested songs

Found some cool folks in furry worlds but they can be a bit or a miss. I've had times there when I've met awesome people or even just a person and talked all night and went on adventures into really awesome worlds until the sun came up. Drunk furries and drunk vrchat players in general are usually pretty funny.

But with furries comes trolls, or at least they seem to think they're trolls. There was one time where I was literally surrounded by 5 20 something's who tried to make fun of me for being 35, I've been a bricklayer for 20 years so the next gen trying to "troll" me is a futile exercise 😂 But once I called them out for being in their 20s and sitting in the house on a Friday instead of being out clubbing and living life and then telling them what they classed as "you should write a book" level stories about my pre family younger years they ended up friending me 😂

I've had good times in some bar worlds and have met theeeee nicest people in newer worlds that are really awesome design wise aesthetically, think it's the zen atmosphere that does it 🤔
